Asking Which Dslr Camera Is Good

those shots I linked to were all taken on f/2.8, wide open at 105mm like yours ideally I'd like to close it a bit, but you can still see plently of detail another idea might be to suspend a flash on a hotshoe adapter (cheap) above the tank aiming downwards to give you more light, but without...

Asking Which Dslr Camera Is Good

I feel your pain! I have the exact same problems, using a tripod is a must if you're using low shutter speeds when I took the close ups on this thread (below) i was using shutter speeds as low as 1/15 sec with the help of a tripod...

Asking Which Dslr Camera Is Good

hehe, yeah once youve got the hardware, thats when you realise you don't live in a parallel universe where conditions are always perfect, its not as easy as point and shoot lack of light, bane of my life

Asking Which Dslr Camera Is Good

any entry level Canon or Nikon will give you acceptable shots, to get close what you need to be worried about is the lens, many lenses are advertised as "macro" but only the ones that have 1:1 magnification in their specifications are true macro and will really give you the good close up results...

    Snail Guzzlers

great :D Striatas were the ones I was really interested in, I'm keeping 2 tanks (one to have loaches added loaches, one without) so there will always be a supply of snails to feed them :)

    Snail Guzzlers

Still in the stock-planning stages for my new 160L tank, one addition is going to be one of these two loach varieties Botia kubotai or Botia striata aka Burmese and Zebra loaches respectively I've been told that all Botia will eat snails, and I had clowns before that certainly did. Can I get...

    Do Clown Loaches Eat Snails?

I had the same problem once in one of my previous tanks, I was interested in getting some clowns as permenant inhabitants anyway, I got 3 small ones, within *1 hour* all the snails were eaten or hiding in the lid of the tank! Within a couple of days there were none to be seen ever again. Not...

    Rainbows Lengths And Stocking

I do like them, but I'm trying to go for a certain 'look', I'm sticking with Melanotaenia varieties so that they all blend in together. Also my barbs are nasty fin nippers :(

    Rainbows Lengths And Stocking

Hi all, I'm doing a bit of research on Rainbow sizes in preparation of stocking my new 160L tank. Because there are so many species there are lots that don't have profiles on this website or other aquarium sites, so I'm taking the minimum tank size to be similar for similar sized rainbows. The...

    Mixed Schooling In Rainbowfish

wow! my Incisus is around twice the size of my largest Praecox, they never try it on with him, sometimes he gets a bit rowdy in the mornings when he's displaying but it never gets too violent. My new tank has plently of cover for the little ones to hide if things kick off, I reckon they'll be ok...

    Sick Rainbow, Can't Diagnose

    Gallons, Us Or Imperial!?

This is probably the most stupid question ever uttered on this forum, but... when recommended tank sizes and such are quoted, are they generally using imperial gallons, or US ones? It's quite significant - I just got a 160L tank, so in imperial it's 35G, but in USG it's 42!

    Quick Question About Filter Maturing

i moved this topic here http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/319179-quick-filter-question/page__fromsearch__1 the general consensus was that the state of the water and the tank had no effect on the rate of maturing, the only way to speed it up was to put already mature media in with the...

    Mixed Schooling In Rainbowfish

I'm planning the stocking of my new tank and I am making it almost exclusively Rainbowfish. My problem is that they all look so cool I just want to have one of each!!! Normally it's recommended that you have schools of atleast 6 or 7 for schooling fish. I have 7 Praecox Rainbows and 1 Red...

    Quick Filter Question

thanks waterdrop, I'll try that I obviously had gotten the *wrong* idea into my head somewhere that if you've got a mature tank then the bacteria you need for the filter is in the water column and placing new media in there would mean it matured more quickly... is there any truth in that?

nice one :) you could probably get away with a higher ISO in exchange for a faster shutter speed, shouoldnt be able to tell the difference between 100 and 200 when you've scaled the shots down twice weekly algae scraping! thats fast growth! my plec does a good job keeping mine clean (apart from...

Done A Few Things To My Tank

your angels look great :D i normally have loads of sand in my tanks - 2 or 3 times deeper than that, dunno if thats a good thing or not though lol have you considered getting some small pebbles or coarse gravel to break it up a bit? might make it look more natural

Various Pictures And Video's Of My Tank And Fish

for single subjects use the widest aperture (smallest f-number), this will give you more light and make the background blurry, bringing out the fish for the whole tank, don't use the widest, but you don't have to close it all trhe way down either, or your shutter speed will suffer and you won't...

Various Pictures And Video's Of My Tank And Fish

would be difficult to get good aquarium shots without an SLR, try cranking up your ISO settings and keeping the shutter speeds above 1/50 sec, using a tripod also helps, if you can change the aperture manually, widen it as much as possible (small f number) - the more light you're getting the...
