    New Fish Keep Dying!

Thanks Marieuk. I am certainly willing to give it a try; only issue I have is that I feel I am experimenting on the new fish - as there's only a chance that it is the acclimitisation causing the problem. If not then the fish will die again. But the fact the Cory is still alive tells me that...

    New Fish Keep Dying!

Thanks Harlequins, but as I already stated in my above post; reason for this is that once the bag is open, the release of CO2 and interchange of O2 causes a jump in Ph within the bagged water which of course makes the ammonia in the bag more toxic. Drip acclimitization isn't a science. It's a...

    New Fish Keep Dying!

I acclimatized the fish in the same way I have acclimatized fish for the past 3 years. Also, even if the tank was theortically too small and was causing the fish stress, I don't believe that such stress would kill the fish in less than 12 hours. No. That is not the way I acclimatize; I have...

    New Fish Keep Dying!

Thanks for the reply. Ph is 8.0 as detailed in my original post. The water from the LFS is the same as ours as the LFS is two roads away from us. And all the fish in my 200litre tank came from the same shop. I acclimatized the fish in the same way I always do. Float the sealed bag in the...

    New Fish Keep Dying!

When the Minnows were in the tank there was no heater - however it was a hot day, the tank was at 24C. The Cory is an Albino Cory - he seems happy. They don't get too big for a 15litre tank, and if it does get too big it can be moved into my 200litre tank. This doesn't explain the current...

    New Fish Keep Dying!

My old tank has been running for 3 years. I took sponge media out of my Fluval 405 and cut it to the same size as the sponge supplied with the new filter, then used that. Water quality seems to be perfect, no ammonia or nitrite so the media and filter seem to be doing the job. I am using API...

    New Fish Keep Dying!

Last tuesday I got my daughter a 15 litre fish tank. I've been keeping fish for about 3 years or so myself, had have never had any problem with losing fish. The 15 litre tank came with its own filter and lighting, we also added in a 25watt heater. I used media from my established tank, which...

    Medication For Intestinal Worms?

I just lost a Malawi to intestinal worms (I could see them coming out of his anus). Could someone please recommend me some medication for this, and where in the UK I can buy it? Thanks

Fry On The Way: Sponge Filter Or Breeding Trap?

One of my Mbuna is currently holding fry in its mouth and they are due fairly soon. I new to African Cichlids and don't know whether to put the fish in a spare tank with a sponge filter - or if I should put her in a breeding trap. She's about 3inches in length.

So Who Cools Their Tank In This Hot Weather?

Crazy situation that! You know, I'm actually thinking that in my tank it's the rocks that are contributing towards the high heat. Rocks hold and then radiate heat don't they, and I have a whole ton of them in there.

So Who Cools Their Tank In This Hot Weather?

I've spent the last hour or so reading threads dated all the way back to 2003 regarding fish tanks that are too hot due to very hot weather. There was all sorts of advice from using ice cubes/bottles, to increased aeration or blowing fans across the water surface, increasing A/C, turning off...

    Tank & Cichlid Questions

Hey all, we are just about to move house and I am going to re-stock my tank with Lake Malawi Cichlids. However I have a few questions I hope you can help out with: 1) What is the best colour substrate to bring out the fish colours? 2) What is the best rock type and colour to get? I have...

    Can Excessive Aeration Raise Ph?

I will try and get some different airstones. That said, if there is only a difference of 1ppm of CO2 between 7.2ph and 8.2ph - they why wouldn't this Ph increase be due to the aeration?

    Can Excessive Aeration Raise Ph?

Tank KH 14 GH 25 Tap Water KH 14 GH 25 Doing a rough calculation - there is a difference of about 1ppm CO2 in the tank water. The tap water has 1.5ppm CO2 whilst the tank has about 0.2ppm CO2. That doesn't seem enough of a change to account for the difference in Ph levels. So perhaps it...

    Can Excessive Aeration Raise Ph?

Aeration is the only thing that has changed. It has done this before when I added aeration. I can gaurantee that if I stop the air now, by tommorrow the Ph will be back to 7.2 Not the best article - but if you do a search you will find plenty of information of using aeration to increase Ph.

    Can Excessive Aeration Raise Ph?

Aeration increases Ph because it reduces the amount of Carbon Dioxide within the water. If you add CO2 it causes the Ph to drop. If you add O2, then it removes CO2 which causes the Ph to increase. I tested the water with an API kit and a Hagen kit just to make sure. They both give the same...

    Can Excessive Aeration Raise Ph?

I recently had to increase the aeration in my tank. Since doing so - the Ph has raised from 7.2 to 8.2 - The fish seem ok with it at the moment - though obviously I don't know what this may mean long term. It's been about 2 weeks since I increased aeration. Any suggestions please? Do I need...

Best Way To Safely Reduce Tank Temperature?

I used to have discus in my tank along with a few tank mates. Now I no longer have the discus, so the tank temperature probably doesn't need to be so high. This tank now has severum and an oscar in it. What is the best way to safely reduce the tank temperature? Is a 2C drop across a 24 hour...

New Oscar Laying At Bottom Of Tank

I recently added an oscar into my tank. He is about 2 inches long at the moment. He seems to spend a lot of his time laying on the bottom of the tank, or in a corner behind bogwood. Then every so often he swims around the tank for a while before going back to his corner. He is eating and...

Presense Of Ammonia - How Much Harm Does It Do?

Thanks for this Bignose - really helpful indeed. Thing is, I've been misreading the API test kit readings. The 0.1ppm displays as such a faint tint of green, that I have always put it down to light, or my crappy eyes. In the end I tested some bottled water and compared the results with my...

    Filter For Oscars

Keep in mind that an FX5 runs at 48Watts. You will probably notice this on your electric bill, as it uses more or less the same power consumption as leaving a single light tube on for 24/7.

    Fishles Cycle Help Please

The water change isn't necessary, it's just what I would personally. So I can start/re-start with a clean(er) slate. If you don't want to do that, just top the ammonia back up to 5ppm and see if it drops over the next few days.

    Fishles Cycle Help Please

I'd suggest doing a water change of 50% or so (make sure you de-chlorinate the water). Then bring the ammonia back up to 5ppm again. This is to see of the cycling has stalled. If all is ok then the ammonia should start dropping again.

Presense Of Ammonia - How Much Harm Does It Do?

I currently have 0.1ppm of Ammonia in my tank. The tank is about 18months old, it has 2 Severum in it and 5 corys. For filtration I run a Fluval 305 and a Fluval 405. The Fluval 405 is about 2 days old, and has not yet fully cycled - I seeded it with a small amount of media from the 305. So...

    Ammonia Poisoning (Stupid, Stupid Mistake!)

Stringy "Gunk" On Severum - What Is It?

I have had these Severum for about 3 days now. I just noticed some "gunk" on one of them. I have seen this stuff in the fishtank before I got the severums but only in small quantity it usually ends up attached to a plant, or sometimes a fish. I am wondering if this is being produced by the...
