My cat does that, he drinks out of the snail tank......the pond.....the water feature....the toilet.....the washing up bowl.........the tap (drip drip).....used car washing water!.....puddels, he has a purrrrfectly good clean fresh bowl on the floor twice a day....strange cat :S

How long does it take for baby platies to grow to the size were you can put them in with grown platies? I have one baby platy (female i think) about 3-4mm big, how old is she?

Fish dont realy need the light much, but the plants will need 8 hours. I leave my lights on for 10 hours a day, the fish are fine with that and the plants are blooming. :) . So if i turned the lights on at 8am they would be turned off by 8pm.

Yes nitrate is the safe one but should not be above 40 (max). If you are doing a cycle with fish you will still need to do water changes,i did them every day even 2 times a day to help my fish out. The fish should come before cycling,it may take upto a week longer to cycle the tank but keeping...

The trouble is the healthy bacteria will have to rely on the gravel i put in from the old tank as i had to abort the idea of puting the old filter in with the new as the baby palty needed it for the old tank again, well at least it was in the new tank for 2 hours at least.

My nitrates in my tap water are 40, maybe its your tap water, your tank will start cycling soon as mine did on the second week.

UK28scots If you are doing a FISHLESS cycle you will need to add ammonia or fish food or prawns (ive been told) If you are doing a cycle WITH FISH you DO NOT need to add any amonnia or fish food to cycle the tank as the fish will cycle the tank. :D

OK so i phoned and i walked and i drove and no-one anywere sold pure ammonia and after getting the wrong stuff from the hardware store i was told of another way of doing a safer cycle with my fish (again and same fish). I was told to sit the new filter in the old tank for a week which i did and...

I forgot to say that i have a polyester filter in at the moment, should i change it to the carbon filter for this type of cycling?.

I went to my local hardware shop and i got some ammonia!.......at last. I read the label and there was no info into what is in it though, it is called max ammonia, is this the right one?. When i shake it it froths up at the top.

Well thats it, i give up ive looked and looked at all the supermarkets and asked at the chemists and NO-ONE sell ammonia :no: . Im at a loss at what to do next, ive been adding fish food to the new tank and letting it rott, i done a reading today and ammonia is about 0.10 and nitrite is 0.20...

I cant find the post, and i have looked all over the internet and searched store web sites including chemists and also boots and none seem to have ammonia. No,no never cycling with fish again, i didnt lose any but i was scared for them and i didnt think it was fair, i lost all my nails. I will find it less stressfull cycling without my lovelys :wub:

I have been observing my fish and there is a male that is always randy and nipping the females and the other male, i think he is a bully and could be the culprit.But on the other hand they only stated to lose scales after i added the 2 sucking loaches, i have added aquarium salt now 1 to calm...

Should i add salt if i have sucking loaches in the tank?, some of my platys are looseing scales and i thought salt might help them a bit, i am also using anti-bacteria in the tank.

Hello im back, my first tank cycled a week ago all 8 platies are fine and ive added 2 sucking loaches which are fine too,also 6 platies are STILL pregnant and im awaiting the frys arrival soon. I have final got the money for my new tank after counting endless 1ps and 2p coins and changing them...

It took a while to get the picture but i sat there with my camara phone against the glass and waited for her to swim by it.
