Keep in mind that a sudden drop in temperature of even a few degrees will stress your fish. This is one of the major causes of ich.

BTW, lowering the water level actually lowers the total available oxygen. Increasing your circulation can help with oxygenation.

I wouldn't be worried about 82 degrees. If you are not careful, using ice can cause a sudden drop in temperature, especially in smaller tanks, which can be much more detrimental than a slightly higher than normal temperature. It's much easier to control the room temperature.

Actually, I've found them to be on the less aggressive side as far as cichlids go. I see an African cichlid in the OP's tank (Zebra? very aggressive) which may end up tormenting the fish in question.

Odors are subjective. One person's slight earthy smell could be another's stench. If the smell is not the "normal" odor that comes from a tank, you need to track down the source. Start with an ammonia test. Also, do some sniffing around to see if the odor is coming from filter media.

Most healthy fish will easily live a couple of weeks without being fed. Fasting the entire tank should not be a problem.
