    It Will End In Tears

Did a post get deleted? I don't see any attitudes. Maybe a difference of opinion about Nitrates but nothing else.   As to the cooling, if you are going to do it it needs to be controlled. I used to hear the horror stories every year of someone who was worried about the heat and attempted to cool...

    Tank Temp Issues.

Keep in mind that a sudden drop in temperature of even a few degrees will stress your fish. This is one of the major causes of ich.

    Tank Temp Issues.

BTW, lowering the water level actually lowers the total available oxygen. Increasing your circulation can help with oxygenation.

    Tank Temp Issues.

I wouldn't be worried about 82 degrees. If you are not careful, using ice can cause a sudden drop in temperature, especially in smaller tanks, which can be much more detrimental than a slightly higher than normal temperature. It's much easier to control the room temperature.

    New Community Tank

You know what they say about letting go of something you love, right?   The tank that is getting set-up is the same type as my 2nd tank ever, I lost that to a robbery. Long story but let's just say that I was not in a position to pursue the matter and had to let it go with a whole bunch of other...

    New Community Tank

Thanks BT, it really does pain me to let it go. Before that one fell into my lap (it was a freebie), I thought a 70gal (48x18x24) was my favorite tank. Now that I've decided to go back to Africans, I'm really going to miss it. I'm hoping to get a few hundred for the tank and stand, so that I can...

    New Community Tank

Good news/bad news scenario here.   Bad news is I have to let go of my 120 gal tank that I just acquired this past winter. I have a small house and it's just too big.    Good new is I am downsizing to a 33 gal flat back hex and going back to Africans. I am transferring the sand and two filters...

    Suggestions For 4X2X2

Okay, thanks for that.   I'm no expert but I did one Discus tank. It had live plants. The fish and the plants did well. Unfortunately, I can't say anything about how well it did long term because I had to move less than a year after I set-up that tank. I went saltwater at the new location and...

Live plants not recommended for discus? From my experience discus require frequent small water changes. Not sure how that would be detrimental to plants.

Search Engine Going To The Wrong Place

This is happening on two machines. One goes to that page about wireless routers, the other goes to that adult friend finder. I don't like being just one click away from a virus. This only happens when coming here and I do a fair amount of searching.   Seeing as this forum welcomes young people...

    Oh Man

I'm not sure but I think it would depend on the concentration of the compound in the water and the general health/size of the fish.   I've never come across this in an aquarium but have heard of it happening when an undergravel filter is not properly maintained or left inactive. I'm sure there...

I'm at a loss here.   How was I being rude?   I asked what you have done and then a series of questions that need to answered, except for the last one. What have you already done to figure it out? What are your water conditions? Is the tank cycled properly? What is your maintenance schedule? What kind of equipment are you running? Old Age Or Something Else?

Okay, scratch the first two.   As to the water conditions, that is a matter of opinion. Your fish may have seemed fine but what you are seeing sounds like the symptoms of long term stress.   I doubt if it is age, the deaths are too close together.

    Old Age Or Something Else?

Three things come to mind. You are not going to like hearing them but they need to be said. Please do not call me a bully again.   You did something different recently, black water. What Kind Of Fish Is This?

Actually, I've found them to be on the less aggressive side as far as cichlids go. I see an African cichlid in the OP's tank (Zebra? very aggressive) which may end up tormenting the fish in question.

The small iridescent spots are not an indicator. Bluegills have them too. Age, lighting, mood, general health can affect how prominent they are. What kind of sunfish? There are so many. I can see a resemblance to a Blue Gill but I don't think the body is deep enough. I still see Jewel Cichlid, but the spot at the back of the dorsal is making me have my doubts.

    Adding New Fish: Best Practices?

Necessary? No   Advisable? Yes   Having more than one filter has many advantages but for the purposes of this discussion lets stay with the redundancy in case of failure.   Failures don't usually happen at convenient times. In fact, unless you spend most of your day near your tank, it will...

    Foul Tank Smell

Odors are subjective. One person's slight earthy smell could be another's stench. If the smell is not the "normal" odor that comes from a tank, you need to track down the source. Start with an ammonia test. Also, do some sniffing around to see if the odor is coming from filter media.

Anyone Else Ever Had A Fish Swim Like This Before?

Most healthy fish will easily live a couple of weeks without being fed. Fasting the entire tank should not be a problem.
