How Hard Is It To Keep Marine Fish And Maintain Tank?

Yup. You'd be surprised just how much space most marine fish need. I'm in the process of converting my 155L, and was shocked to see just how few fish can comfortably be kept in a tank that size. They're always small in the shops, but a lot of marine fish grow to be quite large and aggressive. In...

How Hard Is It To Keep Marine Fish And Maintain Tank?

Also, you're talking a minimum of 400L to keep Dory, a regal tang. Now, going by 1kg per 10L of water, you're talking £400 of live rock alone...

    12V Power Back-Up

You could get a UPS, but as the others have said, if it's only for an hour or two, I would have thought your tank would be fine.

    Water Marks?

Do you mean on the outside of the glass? If on the outside you can clean it however you wish (glass cleaner, polish etc), as long as you make sure that none gets into the tank. It's a good idea to spray the cleaner on the cloth rather than directly onto the glass.

Can I Keep A Single Female Betta With Guppies In A 30 Gal

Agreed on this. While a large portion of them will get eaten, the odd few will somehow manage to hide for long enough to make it to adulthood.

    Filter Bacteria

Your filter will house as many bacteria as it needs to to deal with the ammonia being created, and no more than that. Water changes are irrelevant. While the_lock_man is right in that there will always be a very small, undetectable amount of ammonia present as it may take a little while before...

Shipping Fish- Am I The Best Or The Luckiest?

I agree, a bit of both. You were lucky they survived that long, but them being packed the way they were would definitely have improved their chances.

The Ups And Downs Of Fishkeeping

I'm in the process of converting from tropical to marine, and pretty much everything that could go wrong, has gone wrong! I wish now I had drilled the holes in a different place, messed up my pipework not once, not twice but three times, had to remove the weir and ended up in hospital because I...

    Filter Bacteria

Are you cycling, or are you talking about in an established tank? In an established tank you should never be removing ammonia because there shouldn't be any, you will be removing nitrates.

What Other Food Is There To Feed My Fish

You can buy bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia and all that sort of thing frozen in cubes, to keep you going until you're able to culure them yourself.

    Planning A Marine Aquarium

I agree, a UV steriliser isn't necessary, it's just a desirable addition. You can do without it. Live rock you want a minimum of 1kg per 10L. You're 115L so 12kg would be a safe bet. You may be able to get away with 10kg, remembering that you're going to have some water displacement, but 12kg...

    Planning A Marine Aquarium

Anemones are not generally known as being easy to keep. You also say you don't intend to develop an entire reef tank, but by choosing to keep anemones you are making your tank a reef tank which are a lot more complicated to keep than fish only systems. You're going to struggle to have all of the...

    Making A 7Ft Tank

Sumps aren't terribly complex. Your tank is acrylic rather than glass, so even easier to drill for.

    Water Test Kits

A refractometer will likely be more accurate for measuring salinity than a hydrometer. More expensive, but you get what you pay for. Salifert are a well respected brand and do tests for almost everything. I think they do Oxygen. As for hardness, consider whether you want to measure GH, KH (aka...

    Amano Shrimp Killing Fish

I had amano shrimp and never had any problems with them. I'd have thought what was shown in the video was an extreme exception rather than a rule. I wouldn't let it affect anyone's decision to get amano shrimp.

    German Blue Ram Last Attempt!

Quick lesson on water hardness: Water hardness refers to the amount of minerals in the water. KH (Carbonate Hardness) specifically measures the amount of acid you would have to add to get the water down to a given pH, as the minerals neutralise it. If you have particularly high (or even...

Fishless Cycle In 150 Words Or Less

I don't think that a wall of text is necessarily a bad thing. A quick guide similar to this one may be a good thing, but I think as well as that it's important to explain to beginners why we're doing this ("The guy in the shop told me I just had to pour this bottle in and wait three days!"), and...

    My New Saltwater Tank!

Looking much better already! Sorry you lost the tang. This is another one of those occasions where I wish fish would just die. I hate that people can keep fish in terrible conditions and they just keep going on, and because they're still alive people assume they must be doing alright! I hope...

    Tank Cycling

I would hope that, with this being a marine tank, that the OP is using RO water rather than tap. If not, then that might go some way to explaining the problem. I agree that the test kit might be to blame though. What kind of kit are you using?

    Planning A Marine Aquarium

The thing with sumps is this: Overflow boxes are terrible and unreliable. Therefore, it is nearly always recommended you drill your tank, but you won't be able to do this if you already have your tank full of live rock and creatures. I'm in the process of converting my 155L to marine (a...

    Starting First Saltwater Aquarium!

I'm not sure where you heard most saltwater tanks are acrylic. There's certainly no reason you can't use a glass tank. I agree that a 5 gallon tank is certainly not advised for a beginner. Many, many times more so than freshwater fish, saltwater fish need stability in their water stats, and in...

How Do I Lower The Ph?

8 isn't overly high, and there are plenty of fish that would be perfectly happy in pH 8 water. It is much more important to fish to have a stable pH than a "correct" one.

    Cloth In My Aquarium

I wouldn't use cloth. You can never be sure that dyes aren't going to leech into the water. One thing I have heard of people doing is getting some aquarium safe silicone, then covering the jar (or other object) in gravel.

    Bubble Magus

I've got the 3.5 version. I got mine second hand and admittedly haven't had chance to test it out yet (still setting up my tank), but it looks to be a solid, well made piece of kit. I went with BM because I heard lots of good things online about them.

    Neons With Angels?

Some people say yes, other people say no. In the wild, angels eat neons. It may be possible, but I don't think anyone can guarantee it, and it's your risk to take. I do agree that 110L is rather small for an angel though.

    Lack Of Marine .... Photos

As I said earlier in the thread, I don't have my tank up and running yet, but I will show a progress shot. I siliconed the weir in yesterday, and today I acquired some blue paint and my blue acrylic arrived, so I've spruced up the tank this afternoon. Needs another coat of paint, but it...

    Lack Of Marine .... Photos

I must admit that I was a very active member when I had my freshwater tank, but there just don't seem to be many salties around here and I've been posting most of my questions on another forum. I've not got my tank set up yet, but I can share some photos of pipes and stuff I've made for it so far

    Testing The Waters

Hi and welcome. You don't necessarily need your own RODI system, but you will definitely need RO water. Most LFS sell it. Mine sells it for 10p a litre and in a 75L tank I wouldn't have thought you'd want to be changing much more than 15L in one go, so it will probably work out cheaper to just...

First Marine Tank - Questions And Advice!

Most fish should be able to tolerate 20ppm quite easily, but any corals (including the one you have there on your rock) are much more sensitive and I would be looking to get it down. You can only improve the situation by doing a few small water changes. Fingers crossed the nitrate is just a...

    Cleaning Glass With Fish In

My tank is the same, though it takes so long with a little magnetic cleaner. I just throw myself at the tank every so often, either with a dishcloth or one of those green scouring sponges. Obviously unused ones that I keep just for aquarium use, and not the type scouring sponges with soap in...

I made my own DIY python system. Much cheaper than buying one, but it works just as well! There's a link in my description if you're interested. Let's Set The Record Straight About Pwcs

I wouldn't have thought it was possible to do too many changes as long as the water is dechlorinated and reasonably temperature matched. Back before I went marine, I used to do 80% water changes every week. The water wasn't always as temp matched as I'd have liked it and I poured dechlor into...
