Since treating my 5 gallon with maracyn for bga I have totally neglected it. It seems the bga has been beaten so now it's time to take some interest in it and get it cycled in preparation for Puff, my dwarf puffer when I get him.

Here it is at present:

(more to come)

the glosso is growing upwards. I took the lid off for the first time in about a month...and ooops :*) that might be why the glosso is heading up for light. Will trim today!!

Now for the 20 gallon...first the good part:

The maracyn seems to be killing off the black brush algae...My java moss was pretty much black last Sunday with only a few newer bits green...

My heater had a huge bit of furry black brush algae on top...now it's kinda turning grey and there is definitely less there than last week!

Glosso coated in bga. It's still not dead after 5 days dosing. But don't you think the bga looks like it's dying?

And finally the seagrass looking a bit worse for wear :(
The other plants don't look to good either but they looked fine in the photos, so I wont bother posting them.

hi, is the co2 that you are using on the 5 gal ok for fish , as i have a 5 gal and want to add co2 to it. im just worried that there would be 2 much co2 going in the tank and then i cant put fish in it. or can u regulate the amount of co2 going in with the nutrfin co2 units.

:grr: this forum keeps playing up for me. Keep replying then losing my messages.

I'll try again...

CO2 is fine, but like with everything else in a small tank it just needs to be monitored carefully.

At the mo (well before I neglected it) I was adding 1/2 teaspoon yeast to the mixture. This was producing over 50ppm CO2, which is fine cos I don't have fish yet. When I get my puffer I'll be aiming for 30ppm. You just need to play around with the mixture to get it right. Generally more yeast means higher CO2 output, but it won't last for long. Less yeast means less CO2 output but the mixture will last longer.

What did you decide to do in the end Sam, did you only dose for the 5 days?

If you still see any bga i would remove it whether its dead or not

Probably doing the upgrade if you make a reply you will see what i mean......just as i got the hang of the old one as well........dont see any new features......whats strikethrough.......oh ok maybe just like strike it out or something.

ooooh they have changed it again. Theres also that new options thing at the top of the post.

I added a 6th dose... :*) Fish still seem happy/healthy/normal. I'm due the water change tonight, but am going to leave it till morning (am off work at mo - woohoo 2 weeks off :D). Let that last dose stew a bit.

I have trouble cleaning my tank, and doing water changes without messing it up, and it isnt half as full (with plants an such) and i mess it up every time, how do you avoid vaccing up half of your plants?

I don't vacuum the gravel at all in the 5 gallon. But I don't have a fish in it yet to poop.

In the 20 gallon I only vac the open area at the front.

Looking good Sam. I really wish you the best of luck with your BGA hell - I still admire you for sticking with it, I would have been sorely tempted to jack it all in and gone fish-only by now! Respect. ;)

Thanks gf. I just hope this is it now.

I spent hours cleaning my tank today. I took out all the plants and cleaned all of them - yes every glosso plantlet...everything! I binned the worst affected so my tank is looking a bit sparce again, but most are fast growing, so shouldn't be long before it fills up.

I'm on a strict dosing regime :) Keep those nitrates up.

I have a smidging of nitrites in the tank, but hopefully the water change would have helped. I'll keep an eye on the nitrites and do another small water change if necessary.
