Hi,

OK I just bought my second betta, my last one died a few years ago. This boy is a beautiful veil tail who if he were a dog would be a "mutt" - his body is different colors with a few royal blue spots, and his fins are royal blue, pastel blue.

I have him in a 1 gallon tank for now but want to get him something larger. I would also like to get about a 5 gallon tank with a divider - um, if I were to put him on one side and a female on the other....am I gonna end up with baby bettas?

Also if that's not gonna work what other kind of fish could I put in with him or on the other side of the divider? He is bored in this little tank all alone! He's fascinated swimming in circles around his big plant right now. He's lived his whole life in one of those little pet shop bowls and is the biggest begger for food Ive ever seen in a fish. Any ideas for curing the boredom? I swear he watches TV when I turn it on.

Thanks!

OK here's his picture, his name is Bright B)

He loves scaring this little shark statue, so every once in a while I bring it to show him.

If you get a 5G tank and divide it you will not get babies. The fish will not come into contact with eachother.

You could even do 2 males in a divided 5G if you wanted. I have never tried to put other fish with my bettas, but I think there is a pinned topic in the FAQ section regarding tank mates. You could try looking there.

I keep most of my males in 1G bowls. They can see eachother on occasion the way I have them set up(they are in a line on my desk). They seem to like this.

Personally I would go with the bigger tank, as he will really appreciate the extra room. One day I will have 10G tanks divided three ways so that all my boys can have a couple of gallons each.

OK thank you! I know absolutely nothing about fish reproduction :*) I didn't know if they could share even the same water or not!

Your fish are beautiful, I love the photos on your signature!

I think Im gonna try the divided 5 gal tank with Bright on one side and a female on the other.

I think that would be a good idea. Make sure that there are lots of plants so they have somewhere to go hide from eachother. I have a 10g divided three ways, with both of my double tails on either side and a female in the middle. The females space isn't as big as the males, so I have lots of little hidey holes for her to get away from the attention of the males.

There are some great breeders here on the forum that often put their fish up for adoption. Depending on where you are, you may want to consider getting a female from them. For the cost of shipping you can get a good quality female to put on the other side of the divider.
