Is your tank 34G high?

You may need more light than that if you intend on having a tank with more than just low-light plants.

The tubes themselves look ok at first glance. 14000K is a little high by traditional standards and will probably have a high blue content thus encouraging algae. You maybe ok though, time will tell.

Are you using reflectors?

It's a tall tank, i will only be using low light level plants. I am not using reflectors, should i??

from what i've learned from the forum, reflectors double your wpg by directing all the light into the tank and not onto the hood.
Just more light for your money really. :)

with light tubes 50% of the light output is directed upwards, simply because the tube is round.

with a reflector , the upward light is reflected down, in theory this doubles the light output (and K) by 100%.

I don't think thats a options for me because my k's are already a little high. What do you guys think?

A reflector would be fine. It increases the amount of light going into your tank.

A bulb is rated for 7100k, and light is spread over a 360 degree angle. Including upward. So adding a reflector aims light towards your water, rather than the top of your hood. Maximising the amount of light reaching your plants! I cant see why u wouldnt want that.

Goodlink bigmick, id suggest read through that sunny.c!

My tubes, are they not high in k output??? i don't understand the 14000k/7100k what's meant by that??? if i put in refectors won't that increase the k's aswell?

It wont increase the amount coming out of the bulb, but it will increase the amount going into your water, taken up by your plants.

what would the effects be of having a solid white background? I know that painting your hood white will increase light in the tank but what about the background?

It would reflect light that would be lost outside the back of your tank forward no dought. If you place your reflector properly, light should be deflected downward and not towards the rear anyway! :)

Most lighting fixtures come with reflectors now. But some, like Sunny.C's dont. If they dont, a variety of adaptations can be made. Including the use of PVC pipe, paint (not normal house hold paint so check first) or even overturned CD's that will reflect small amounts of light.

Well i just found out they don't make any reflectors for my tank....GRRR
If i keep to low level plants am i ok??? Or must i create more light some how?

You can make many forms of a DIY reflector. But its not all that necessary, its just getting more light to your plants, which is what you are trying to do!

The company that manafactured the tank doesnt need to build one for you to make one! :D

I suggest you go with the lights you have, with low level plants.

But go away and read up. Do some research. You should be able to decide for yourself which plants will work and which wont for what specific light you have. And when it comes time to change lighting or upgrade, you should know exactly what to do without askin anyone! :)
