My Beautiful Rainbow Brite (nicknamed Rainby) ...i found him today barely moving, not going up for air, with pineconey scales....its been so long since i've had a sick fish. :( I hope I am doing it right to try to save him, i separated him out of the tank (he's never been aggressive, honest, i swear!) put him in a container submerged in the same tank (a measuring cup hung over the side) with a little melafix. He wont eat and normally he's a hungry hippo. I'm really freaking out here, i've had this fish through everthing! Three moves, when I first got him i didnt even know about water conditioner! but he made it through....i'll be on edge till he's better... does anyone know what the recovery rate is from this pinecone-itis? :-(

Thanks
~dEx :*)

It is called dropsy and I am not sure the recovery rate of it. I've never experienced a fish with it so sorry I'm not much of a help. I am sure someone will be able to help you out a little more.

I'm very sorry but ther's not much chance of recovery. It's probably better to euthanise. Does anyone else agree? :byebye:

this is him....r u sure? euthanize? if it was better for him......i guess.... :-(

At three years old, he is probably suffering from organ failure, which can cause dropsy. There is a very poor chance of survival, involving a lot of expensive treatment meds that don't tend to work out. I would reccomend euthanasia, but I understand if it would be difficult for you since none of the methods are too pleasant. If you can't bring yourself to end his suffering, you can just make him as comfortable as you can; warm water, meds, quiet environment, no filter current, etc. I lost an old betta to this as well, they usually go in a matter of days, but its not very pleasant.

edit: yes, its hard to tell from the pic, but seeing how he's swollen and has prominent scales, he's likely in the early stages of dropsy. I'm sorry. ::hugs::

no thats his good pic.....i can get a bad pic tho.....hes all pale now....hes alwasy been kinda chubby

this is him now....he's not active at all.......i shudder to think of euthanizing him even though i know it may be the most humane thing.... is there any peaceful way of doing it that you know of?

You can try Collodial Silver...you can get it at GNC.

To Uthanize quietly...get some Clove Oil (I have used Ambesol before when I couldn't find Clove oil..because they are both used for the same thing..relieving pain).

He will just go to sleep and not wake up. You won't see any splashing or any notions that they are upset.

Leave them in a mixture of 4 parts water to 1 part clove oil...for 10 minutes...then check back to see if they are still alive (slightly tapping them should reveal wether or not they are still alive) unless you put him back in fresh water shortly after placing him in the Clove Oil mixture..he will not resume conscienceness.

Then you can seal him up in a bag and either bury him or dispose of him however you wish.

:byebye: sorry about your fish..atleast he lived a long, full, and loved life.

Thanks for the info.... i really appreciate it ....he's had a great life, and been an amazing fish! everyone who sees him just loves him, and hes had the MOST personality of any fish i've ever had. its really going to be sad to see him go. The ambesol may be the only thing I can get access to, but now that i think about it that would be pretty painless. i think i can deal with that :-(

:-( Im really sorry to hear about your Betta. I know EXACTLY how you feel, and its very sad. I hope he's alright!

Thanks for the replies everyone  Unfortunately Rainby didnt make it. :byebye: The only thing that was good was that it was swift and I didnt have to euthanize him. He had a long life, 2002-2005, possibly longer because i'm not entirely sure how old he was when i got him. You know, I really can't believe he's gone, I feel like I've always had him. I have other bettas but its just not the same, i'm not as attached. i thought for sure he was going to pull through this time.....just like always....i guess he's in fishy heaven now :-(
RIP, Rainby  , love ya.......

thats a long life for a betta......anyways its good you did not euthanize him.....people will argue its humane, but how many people will ever euthanize another human even at their worst suffering......

Let's not open that can of worms in here. please. -_-
