try pushing the shutter button down half way until it beeps, flashes or something, than push it down the full way. this is how mine focuses.

Yeah I keep doing that and it goes through the auto focus motions... but it never locks on to what I want. Even using a spot meter.

have you tried using macro mode?
What type of camera is it so mabe i can get a better idea

Its a Sony CD Mavica with The laser finder. The Laser is probably getting thrown off by the glass.

Any way to turn the laser off? you can get a good simple camera for the price of a couple of fish.

ive have no idea what happens when you put your finger over it then take a pic if its fidley then use some blu-tac or tape see if that works

Nah, I am looking into getting an SLR film camera. That maybe the way to go. Then I can control all aspects of it.

hope you have a scanner, if not, think about a digital SLR.
Not even really necessary any more. There are so many places that will develop film and give you a CD with your pictures too.... a scanner isn't one of the required components to use film. Since I can't afford a Digital SLR, I too had thought about a decent Canon 35mmSLR for $150... or even hitting the Pawn Shop and seeing if I can find a cheap used SLR.
