hi,

I was bought this plec by my partner. She was told it was a clown plec and that it won't grow too large. Well, it's been hiding a lot in the tank but I managed to get a pic of it.

Any info greatly appreciated, and even nominations for names.

Mark

By the way sorry for the poor picture quality, I had to take the pic on my phone as it's all I had close at the time. Getting a pic. of him/her not camouflaged on the wood is a very hard task :p

I'm no expert but that looks like a regular pleco?

I'd agree just looks like a young sail fin pleco which actually get quite large 12-20" perhapes try calling the store it was purchased from to get a bit more information.

I'm afraid the plec you have there is either a sailfin/gibbiceps - both grow way over a foot long.

I suggest you tell your partner to go back and make sure they give her the correct fish. If they honestly can't tell the difference between a common pleco and an l-number clown, then I recommend you both find yourself a better lfs.

Although, if you're happy to accommodate such a large fish then by all means keep him! :D

I've spoken to partner and she is adamant she was told it was a clown plec and that it would only grow to a size of 2 - 2 1/2". They even told her she couldn't get a common plec as it would get too big (in a 25g US tank).

Looks like I'll have to speak to them and arrange a return :-(

I'm sure she was. Don't worry, we're not saying she's fibbing, it's that idiot at the lfs.

sounds like they are clueless... even the small clown plecs get to 5-4"

THe latest from the LFS is that they are adamant that it is a clown plec, and that they had no sail fins in at that point. And, more to the point, they would not have let a sailfin or similar go for £1.50. They also said it will quickly grow to ca. 6" and then stop.....

I would take it back, demand a refund and then go elsewhere.

It's one thing for an lfs to talk crap, but another to actually argue that they are right when eveidence to the contrary is presented. Clowns aren't even spotted, they're striped!

Does the lfs have any books with plecs in? If so, grab one off their shelf, find the sailfin and shove it in their faces.

If that doesn't work, tell 'em I'm coming down with my Aqualog book and I'll show 'em what a clown looks like. Then I'll show them the fish.

Alternatively you could print out this article and take it down there.

I was told, and it seems quite true, that lfs usually sell Big plecs, for dirt cheap, and the smaller plecs for higher prices.

And yep theyre apsolute idiots! 2 1/2" for a clown pleco HAHA, thats some mega growth stunting going on there.
