My Managerie of Tanks

Beautiful as always! 😍

May I ask what is in the terrarium?

And would you mind me throwing in my new terrarium? I'm really proud of it :,)
The terrarium in the background I'm assuming? That's our Kenyan sand boa enclosure.

^ he's a nocturnal baby we don't see him a whole lot as he lives burrowed under the sand. He's neat though, gentle guy.

If you like terrariums, here's our crested gecko enclosure as well

^she's a rescue, we are her 3rd owners. She's got some metabolic bone disease going on in her jaw and she's got no tail.

They're both 40 gallon sized enclosures.

I also have a mini terrarium for one of my ant colonies (I'm an ant keeper, while I keep many of them, one of them has a more "showy" enclosure) . This is the outside part for foraging. The nest is not in the pic.

This is the colony that uses that, camponotus castaneus (Chestnut carpenter ant)

And sure! I welcome photos and chitchat from other people on my threads any time!

Oh the sand boa is absolutely breathtaking! 😍 I have yet to see one in person.

The gecko enclosure is is beautiful too, you really have a talent in scaping! The gecko is very cute, I love how cresties have eyes that have no thoughts in them lol.

Here's my terrarium I've set up just yeterday:

It houses some madagascar hissing roaches, and a few sun beetles and their grubs.

Question. Have you ever seen AntsCanada before? Your post just reminded me of him . I remember watching him years back with his massive fire ant colony. I believe he has a giant house/building dedicated to ants now.

Just saw he now has a giant vivarium 🤯

I'm jealous your fern is alive, mine died lol I lack a green thumb and have slowly increased my skills with land plants. Ferns still die on me though.

Im also jealous of the hissing roaches!! Cant keep many here, cant even keep dubias! Not legal unfortunately. Can keep discoids though. Husband says no to any as well, so thats an extra bummer. I think theyre cute. The house invading type (german roaches) are a pain and unwelcome but i find roaches in general as cute as crickets.

ive never seen sun beetles, those are pretty!! My kid would probably love those, he gets excited enough over darkwing beetles lol

yeah cresties have no thoughts, thats part of their appeal haha. Granted, a crested gecko wasnt our first choice, but she needed a home. A family member asked if we wanted to take her because they found her too difficult to care for. Handed her to us in a little 12"x18" enclosure with very little decor. No lights, heat, nothing. They had gotten her from someone else who told her that crested geckos didnt need all that stuff. But also complained that the gecko never ate things. Now, given proper heat and lighting, she eats everything. In fact we have issues with her eating her cleaner crew constantly. I have to replace her isopods every month haha

I have heard of him, I don't really watch his videos though. He is a little controversial in the ant community these days, but I've personally just never really needed to watch anything of his mostly because I've gotten the information I needed elsewhere.

Well, we'll see if the fern and other plants live on me 😅 I'm a specialised plant killer 😂
I've only planted them yesterday...

I love roaches, I have a bin of dubias to that as well. I just hate ones that look like german roaches, so that includes red runners 😬
And any that fly of course :)

I've always wanted sun beetles, I like beetles in general. They're very cute and derpy.

They will climb each other and drink water droplets of each others backs.

IMG_4327.jpeg

And generally, they seem to be really enjoying themselves. They spent nearly two weeks in a small dry tub, no food. Now I can take care of them better 😍

IMG_4339.jpeg

Ugh, reptiles owners like these infuriate me..
Either they take one in, but have no idea how to care for it and then they end up getting rid of it.. Or they just straight up mistreat it.. Why take one in then? I'm glad she's in your hands, you're a good person ❤️

Yep my son would 100% adore those beetles, they got that chonky scarab shape. He loves those types the most. He's always catching junebeetles every summer and begs me to let him keep them 🤣

Yeah I'm not good with land plants, but I've slooooowly gotten better and started expanding my indoor garden. Of course I have to keep anything toxic to cats out of cat reach (pothos, philodendron, etc) and I either hang them up or use them in my fish tanks. But Ive worked my way up a few succulents, peperomia varieties, parlor palm, spider plant, stuff like that. I build a shelf for my plants so they're kept neater, and limit my collection to that shelf mostly, so my husband doesn't complain too much.

Our most difficult plant is our sundew though. That's in our kitchen. Neat plant.

Oh, bonus pics of Mittens the sand boa. They have no thoughts either, also derpy at times. We feed him in a bowl so he doesn't eat his substrate, but dinner time he makes really derpy faces. Best snake. Never see him but he's a blast when we do.

I'm the same tbh, I also like these types of beetles and always pestered my mom to let me keep one 😂 Every kid is the same! 😂

Oh yeah I'm not good with plants in general... My aloe (not vera) like thingy is dying.. Killed my moms calathea rubifarba completely by not watering it. Only two plants so far I cannot kill is some type of a jade plant, and a little ball of a cactus. I'm sooo scared for my terrarium plants tho! I don't want these to die, it would throw off the system :/

Ahh sundew! I love carni plants! My most favorite type of plants 😄
Had a sundew as a kid, but a care taker killed it. Had a venus fly trap, I killed it.. Welp, never had any luck with plants 😂

MITTENS! Perfect name for a sand boa!
He reminds me of a character from game I play (it's goofy with no thoughts).
Mittens is literally the definition of 'not a thought behind those eyes' 😂

Omg I kill aloe too, don't feel bad on that one! I kill chicks-and-hens as well. I have a bunny ear cactus doing okay though. Have killed every fern I've tried too. I also kill lucky bamboo.

We were able to keep a Venus fly trap for about 2 years, but we forgot to hibernate it and it died lol the sundew is doing well though, we don't need to hibernate it. It's just a matter of feeding it bugs once a week and making sure the distilled water in the bowl doesn't run out.

Try spider plants. They seem pretty robust for me, I've got tons of babies I've planted in the gecko enclosure from my main plant. It's a fairly easy one even for me.

Mittens was given his name by my kid and husband, they thought it was funny lol plus my mother in law is terrified of snakes, so Mittens makes him sound way less frightening to her.

The aloe hasn't died yet, but it's in process lol.
I had a lucky bamboo, I killed it lmao.

I dunno what was the case with my venus fly trap, probably underwatered for sure and no bugs for it.

I like how spider plants look like, but sadly I don't have more space in my terrarium. It's just the moss and placement of cork branches. Tbf, I dunno how to feel about the moss 😂

Haha! That one I had figured! Your kid sounds absolutely adorable, and has an amazing skill for naming animals 😄 I, on the other hand, can't name my animals properly 😂

He's named many fish weird names, we just roll with it lol one of our goldfish is named Hammerhead.

Venus fly traps should be watered with distilled water and kept in good humidity. We kept ours in a jar with peat for substrate, a drainage area using rocks, and used distilled water to keep it watered. Needs to be cut and hibernated in the fridge over winter.

Gotta admit, Hammerhead is such a good name for a goldie :D

Yeah, I know that now.. Wish I knew that before as I absolutely adored the plant :(

Your loxozonas (loxozonum) seem much less shy than mine were! How many do you have? Some of mine seemed girthier (more girly) than yours, but it's been a long time. I only had 5 or 6 from 2 different shops (same road trip). Isn't that 1 of your tats?

I love your brochis too!

Can always try again, right? :D

I have 6, but they're usually shy yes. They are more likely to dart away when I approach to take photos. Only one of mine appears to be female as well lol

20241110_203002.jpg

Sometimes they come out into the open, but it's unusual for me to be able to get clear photos before they dart back for the plants again lol

And yes! They're what I've got a tattoo of on my hand, I love these cories a lot, they're really nice looking fish. I like the little reflective strip on above the black line. It's not obvious, but it's so pretty when it's visible.
