Well, you know the answer already which have been given by my fellow members. It's such a pity that fish are mislabeled at a store. And when they even sell it as if they were the fish that the label says, tells already something of their lack of knowledge. I hope they didn't call themelves "specialists".

to be fair, it may just have been a case of the tank labels not having been updated yet, or the molly tank and platy tank are right next to each other, and someone misread/made a mistake with the labels. Most places tend to store livebearers near each other, and shrimp in their own sections etc, after all!

I agree with what you're saying. But it's still a lack of knowledge to sell those fish as being another fish. They should've been aware of it that it concerned another type of fish.
I do have to admit that it also happens overhere at stores from time to time.

Yeppers, it happens, and it's a shame so many fish stores (no mentioning any brand names, but especially big box stores) will stick employees in the fish section who aren't hobbyists, so don't know or care about the species or care. Or possibly even worse - act as though they're specialists and give terrible advice and sell completely inappropriate fish that lead to the tank disasters that some poor beginner has come here for help, after being given bad advice from a store.

But yeah, it's definitely a bad sign if the tanks are mislabelled, and the staff don't ask any questions or make sure the buyer knows what fish they're even buying, and can't tell a molly from a platy!

You can see that it's a platy becuase the body is shoter. Molly fish have a more enlongated body while the platty body is shorter.

Actually, there are also platy species that have a more stretched bodyshape. Molly species come in short, stretched and moderate sizes.
