a couple of days ago I got a halfmoon for my 60ltr planted tank.
he seemed pretty skittish at first so I've been tryna get him used to my presence by feeding him a little (around 2-3 hikari pellets) every time I walk past the tank (every 2 hours or so).
I've heard that it's dangerous to overfeed bettas, but every time I see him he seems to be hungry. He's either hovering by the surface waiting for food or actively chasing baby cherry shrimp around the tank.
do they always act like this? or is it an actual indicator that they're hungry?
at the minute he's only being fed hikari pellets (and the few shrimp he manages to catch). Ive ordered some frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp to hopefully keep him feeling a bit more satisfied..

also included some pics just to get some opinions of him. as im new to bettas I haven't got a very well trained eye for spotting any diseases or damaged fins. anything I should be worried about?

He's very handsome, it sounds like you are overfeeding a bit, bettas will come to you when you walk past and sometimes display. The chasing the shrimp could be a territorial thing or he could be eyeing them up as a meal.
