Hi. New to the hobby.

We just got a new angelfish from the store about a week ago. Our other angelfish died - was never really healthy it seems. Didn’t eat much and stayed to himself

Anyway does anyone know what kind of angelfish this is?

Also we have 5 glofish tetra and one white skirt tetra I think. The white tetra has started chasing the other glofish. It seems like when this new angelfish came into the tank. Is this normal? Do we need to have more white skirt tetra? The employee at petco said we didn’t but not sure he knows what he was talking about.

Also since we added the new angelfish it seems like the glofish are much more frantic and active. They keep chasing each other a lot more than normal. How can I tell if this is stress or just having fun?

Also how can I tell sex of my new angelfish?

Thanks

The angelfish species is Pterophyllum scalare. There are several varieties, I think this one used to be called marble, but other members will likely know.

The glofish is a shoaling species, and it should have 10 or more. Same holds for the white skirt. When kept in smaller groups, a shoaling species has a real propensity to become aggressive. This occurs with all shoaling/schooling species.

Skit tetras are prone to fin nip sedate fish like angelfish. I would think carefully before getting more, it would be best to re-home the one you have. The older angelfish may have had things under control, this new angelfish may not.

Hi. Thanks much. I was afraid the employee was incorrect. Wierd thing is that this behavior didn’t go on at all until recently when we got the new fish. Prior the white skirt was totally fine.

I would like to get more glofish but my daughter wants one of each color. So we wait until we find it in the store.

The white skirt hasn’t been bothering the angelfish actually. Just the glofish.

White skirt tetra (I believe)

Which species of glofish do you have? According to their website, there are two tetra glofish - pristellas (or X-ray tetras) and skirt tetras. If yours are the latter, they are the same species as your white skirt tetra. The half of the orange fish in the photo does look like a glo skirt tetra.

Good question. I have no idea there was a difference. All I heard was there was long fin and short fin glofish tetra. Let me try to get a photo

The issue with getting many fish of same kind is that my daughter (9 yr old) wants to name each fish so glofish work because we can tell them apart easily.

Yes, those are glo skirt tetras. There is a man made (by selective breeding) long finned variety of skirt tetra - black skirts, white skirts and glo skirts. All of them, long and short fins and the different colours, are all the same species.

Thanks. So is it okay to keep the one white tetra ? Or do we need to either get more or re home it? We will get a green and red glofish when we can find one.

We can also return the angelfish if it’s causing problems. We thought the other angelfish would get lonely.

In theory, all the skirt tetras should consider the others as part of the same shoal, although biological entities can and do behave against the norm. Did you add the glo tetras after the white one, or the other way round? And how long between adding them?

How many angels do you have?

I was wondering if the white fish was a diamond tetra, but I think it is a skirt tetra glofish. I would leave it where it is. I repeat my caution on the angelfish/tetras. I leave it at that.

Forgot earlier, welcome to TFF. :hi:

Hi. Thanks. We have been watching for fun nipping but have not seen any in a few months.

We added the tetras at roughly the same time but I think the white one came in the last batch.

Thanks!

If you want a group of skirt/ widow tetras, get another tank for them and have 10-20 in the tank. Do not keep them with slow moving fish or fish with long fins.

Thanks for the idea. Unfortunately we can’t get another tank now so need to see if they will all get along. If not we will get another home for the angels.

Is it okay to put the white tetra in a 3 gallon bucket for a day to calm down? Or is that worse?
