I started this hobby about a year ago mainly just some tetras to get started, I was then made aware of female betta groups and wanted to try. This has not gone well 1 I got was male, the hot weather killed 2 and then my male was attacked and left for dead :( looking at one of the. Females I have left and I think it has built a bubble nest...... So is she a he? Pics attached

Kettering Aquatics. Maybe there is more reputable places near me but I am unaware or them. As for pic of underside "he" prefers back of my tank so mayne at feeding time.

female betta splendens have a white ovipositor (egg laying tube), males have a dark one. Males will have a beard (dark bit of skin under the neck.

A short fin male will kill a long fin male and build a bubble nest. Females don't build nests.

It is the anal fin in this case that makes me think male based on the pictures.
It is a really pretty specimen though!
Sorry that the whole mishap happened.

Thanks for the reply's. As soon as I saw the bubble nest I realised. Has no egg spot :( how can u tell when they are babies though? I'm presuming it's difficult from my experience here, or specialist breeders would be a better option ?

The fin size and shape mean nothing in modern domesticated Betta splendens. Males come with a range of fin sizes from long to short and everything in between. Females can be found with short or medium length fins.

your fish is gorgeous and female betta makes bubbles nest
Thanks I thought I was lucky and got a good looking female.... Nevermind they seem much happier having thier own tanks and I'm not gonno get any more so will leave them where happy, cause that's all that's important.
