I was away for about a week so I got a feeding block for my betta, which I have done before, but when I got home my betta was laying on the rocks with all of this weird stuff on the glass and rocks. I only got him a couple months ago and I don’t know what is wrong. I immediately did a water change and changed the filter. After a couple hours I tried feeding him one of the pellets and he lunged at it like always but was missing it every time.

What are your water parameters?

Did a 1 gallon water change. It is a 3.5 gallon tank. I just thoroughly cleaned the tank because of f all of the gunk that was on everything.. I moved the fish to a small one gallon setup while cleaning to try not to stress him out too much

What do you mean when you say "changed the filter"?

What kind of test kit do you have?

Those food "blocks" are known to foul the water; fish can go a week w/out eating

I meant like changed the filter cartridge that was in there. It was just one where you take tank water and put drops in and it changes color

When you change the cartridges, you are removing beneficial bacteria that helps break down ammonia and waste in the aquarium water....NEVER change the cartridges until they are falling apart, clean them by rinsing in old tank water, NOT tap water

You don't know the name brand of your test kit?

I can’t find the box for the test kit and the bottles don’t say on them.

The vacation feeding block might have dissolved quicker than it was meant to and released all the food at once. This could have caused an ammonia or nitrite spike that poisoned the fish.

Big daily water changes and gravel cleaning for a week usually helps the fish, however permanent damage might have been done.

-------------------
The dark green slimy stuff on the rock is blue green algae (Cyanobacter bacteria), which is a form of photosynthetic bacteria (bacteria that can use light like plants do). It loves nutrients and if it started growing while you were away, the vacation food dissolving quickly might have contributed to it's growth. However, changing filter media regularly and lack of water changes and gravel cleans can also cause it to grow.

-------------------
Filter media/ materials should only be changed if they start to break down. If you replace the media, you get rid of the beneficial bacteria that helps keep the water clean and free of ammonia and nitrite.
Filters should be cleaned once a month. The filter pads/ cartridges/ sponges can be squeezed out in a bucket of aquarium water, and the media re-used in the filter. The bucket of dirty water can be poured on the lawn.

If you have filter pads/ cartridges, you can replace them one at a time, with a piece of sponge for a different brand of filter. Just find a filter sponge that is the same size or slightly bigger than you need, and use a pair of scissors to cut it to fit in your filter. Sponges last for years and get cleaned as described above.
