Hello

One of my neon tetra have "developed" this round thing on its face. I do not recall seeing this when we first got them around december last year.

Can anyone tell me what this is and how to help the fish?

Ps. I does not look like a fungi.
Thanks

Looks to be like something inside of its "lip" that is swelling... Im not sure though

I have researched various things and found a "neon tetra disease" amongst other things, there just seems to be so many things that it could be... however I really do hope it's not the mentioned as I'm sure this is fetal?

I have heard that neon tetra disease is common but usually affects the blue line on them first... @Colin_T may know what this is...

There have been reports from several members over the last few years of neons developing a white lump on the mouth. The best diagnosis at the moment is a viral infection affecting just neons. If it is a virus there is no cure, but the fish seem to cope with it until it gets so big they can't eat.
The usual advice is let the fish alone, but keep an eye on it. When it can no longer eat, it should be euthanised.

Oh no! Thats so sad... 😢

What kind of filtration do you have? From what I’ve read about neons, they need highly filtered, (even over-filtered) water without bacteria - which most healthy tanks typically have plenty of - and lots of aeration. I’d perform water changes daily and and vacuum the gravel, etc. This may increase the odds for the other neons in your tank. It could be a fungal infection you could treat as well. The experts around here may help with that.

I have a standard filter with weekly water changes. I was planning to do 2 or 3 per week to see if this helps, though, il try daily per your advice.

I use aqua safe and put in an anti fungus in case of a relation.

I also have albino corrifish in the tank too.
In addition, we have tadpole snails which cane from the plants, which have been in since day 1.

When you say “standard filter” what do you mean? Like is it a hang on back filter? A canister? Sponge filter? … that kind of thing. Also do you have an air-stone or something to provide aeration?

I may have missed it but what size tank is it?

The tank size is about 55 liters.

This is the filter here, sorry I'm not overly educated in this area!

No problem, I’m returning to fish keeping after a long time and I’m still learning and in some cases re-learning. I’m not familiar with that Tetra filter. How long has your tank been established and do you know your water parameters? If you have a test kit, let us know your pH, ammonia, nitrite/nitrate levels, water hardness, etc. If you don’t have a kit, it’d be good time to get one. API master kit is a good all-around kit to have.
