Hey!

I’ve had this little guy for over a year now when a worker in a pet store accidentally caught it in the net and asked me if I wanted the fish for free. He was only tiny when I got him but now hes developed a belly 🤣

He kind of just has his own territory and watches everyone but is really no harm. I’m guessing it’s some kind of Cichlid?

Just curious to know what fish it is:)

It has some characteristics of a choclate gourami... But I don't think ot is... You can look up photos of them to see if you think it is... I looked up brown cichlids and none looked like this.

Hmmm didn’t think of a gourami before as he doesn’t have those long feelers. Unless some species don’t have them? I’m honestly confused with what he is🤣

Edit: looked up chocolate gourami and it’s definitely not one of those. They’re mega cute tho!!

Don't have an answer other than I agree that it's a cichlid, but wondering why the pet store worker would just give you a random fish like that lol, especially for free. Had I done that at the shop I worked at my boss would've wrung my neck lmao. Very irresponsible of them to say the least, giving you no additional information on it from how you're describing it.

I was getting other fish from the same tank and she accidentally caught him in the net at the same time. She just said if I would like him for no extra cost. I asked if they were friendly and I was just happy to have a fish for free. He’s been no harm since so definitely don’t regret saying yes:)

should put him on a diet - as fat is very bad for fish longevity.

It's a girl!
She's a Pelvicachromis pulcher, a fish sold as a kribensis, even though kribensis is a different fish. Confusing, that.
To confirm, look at her dorsal. If there's a spot toward the back, it's a girl. The two other indicators are her size (including the belly - eggs, not fat) and her ventral fins.

What?? Pelvicachromis pulcher is the scientific name for kribensis - why do you say kribensis is a different fish?

So she’s not actually fat?

Going from what I can find online, I don’t think she’s any bigger than any other I can find

Here’s some examples for you :)

I've owned kribs before; I was just going off of someone else statement that it was a fat male. I couldn't see a good picture of the fins which I use to identify sex (though most mature healthy female also have a red belly which that fish does not). Given the quality of the photos i will make no first hand comment on if it is a male or female; fat or skinny. I currently have 4 females and (finger crossed) no males - i had to get rid of my male because well when you put females with males you get (and this is an accurate count) a gazillion and one kribs.
