No back ground and a neutral coloured plain wall has always been my preference. Otherwise it is frosted glass again with a plain wall behind it.
I just used a black plastic leaf type bag on my 35 gallon tall hex tank. I applied it to 3 sides of the hex tank.
On my 29, I bought a black background from Amazon.
On my 10 gallon, I used flat black latex paint. I just brushed it on. Looks fine.

I went over to my local crafts store and found some dark blue poster board that has a night sky on it. It is almost like a black background but I like the star field effect in the back of the aquarium.

I use a moulded piece in one tank, that I bought a long, long time ago.
Whilst relatively expensive, when compared to basic photographic backgrounds, it does provide a useful surface for algae, beneficial bacteria and for fish to lay their eggs upon.

I used to paint the back of my tanks either black or blue. Just a spray can fired at the glass. Mind you the tank must be empty and outside to do that.
PlastiDip spray on rubber paint. Needs to be done in a ventilated area and before the tank is stocked, but has always worked well for me. And if you decide to change it the paint peels off as a single piece.

I spray painted the back of the tank black. You can use krylon fusion or Rust-Oleum painters touch, both will paint on glass.

I hang something black on the back of most of my tanks. Garbage bag and cheap table cloths both work well. I don't like poster board so much because I'm a klutz, and if you splash water on most paper-based backdrops, it makes a permanent mark.
If I want a 3d effect, I carve something out of blue insulation foam (the kind that isn't made up of little beads--that stuff is AWFUL to work with) and paint it with drylok and concrete pigment. My sumatra tank currently has a fake brick wall so made, and I once did a really fun (and extremely tedious) replica of an Angkor temple wall for a Southeast asian tank. It's possible to get quite artistic with that medium, and it's pretty hard to irrevocably screw up with it. @Boundava does a lot of that sort of thing, too, if you want to consult an expert.

Klutz doesn't exist in real German, you americans are better that the guys here! (you never stop learning). With the plant-tangle in all of my tanks I don't need something like that, just waiting a little, and for my visitors only a Picasso would be tidy enough in the back. No idea (have to look in the basement).

I used Oyama adhesive either blue or black.
They will make good background.
They are cheap over here.
In the past, I experimented with different colours papers/plastic sheets used for arts and crafts, even with calendars that have nice sceneries and plants pictures.
3D background can be nice but until now I don't find any 3D colour that I really like.
Also, I may get bored with the 3D after a while.
I still prefer simple background with just one colour.
In my opinion, black or blue are still the best colour to bring out the fish and plants colours.
