Soft water?

What are the unknown cories? Post a photo here, we can identify them and can point you towards a better care regiment.

A little lime chip will harden the water. Or as suggested crushed coral. Lime chip is very stable and will continue to buffer the tank for years. I use it with my african cichlids never had a problem.

I'm not sure what happened. Last night every fish was healthy and active and this morning one of my guppies is dead. He was active and eating and nothing physically wrong with him. No white or stringy poop. nothing at all. Water parameters are 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and 7 nitrate. I feel so bad. Was this because of my water not being hard enough? :( :rip:

Could have been the water, could have been any number of other things. Pet shop guppies are mass produced and poorly bred, and don't tend to live terribly long lives, sadly. Who knows? It could have b,een born with a heart defect or any other internal problem that caused a sudden death, we don't always get to know I'm afraid.

But I wouldn't buy any more livebearers, now you know your water hardness. Think your cories really need sorting as well, I think pandas like it warmer than peppered cories, for one, but you'd need to check the ranges for all of them over on Seriously Fish, both for temp and GH. I know corydoras aeneus can cope with harder water than many of them, which is why I have bronze cories, but you'd need to check the ranges and compare them to your water. But not all cories are the same and need the same things, they have different requirements too.

I'm sorry for your losses hon :(

Most cories do better cooler, with some exceptions. Pandas and paleatus can handle nice and cool. 72F would be perfect for both the species, but it depends on the other mystery species in case they need warmer

:( he was one of my original fish so I had him for a year now
Then if this is the case he may simply have gone from old age combined with soft water. Many store guppies only live 6-18 months, and if he was already grown when you got him he could have been older, or even still if you got him as a younger fish, still is within the "normal" lifespan of most store bought mass bred guppies

This is the corydora I was told was a peppered cory. I was never sure this was accurate though because she looks like the other trilineatus cories I have and it was a petco employee who told me she was a peppered cory with a different pattern.

This is the best pic I could get of the other guy. My camera makes my water look yellow but it's not in real life.

A spotted species... always a fun complex group to identify.

Head shape, disorganized larger spotting, eye mask not reaching much down below the eye...
I'm leaning towards corydoras ambiacus. Some also lack markings in the dorsal which yours shows.

Another cooler water cory

Thanks. Yes, that's exactly what he looks like. He was alone in a tank with red tail sharks. I was told he was a donation and his fins were in bad shape so I felt awful leaving him there.
