Jaguar cichlids could anyone help with sexing?

Hi,
I had brought 2 I though we’re a pair 8” in size then to be told they are both female. so I went and got a 15” male just making sure the smaller one is definitely a female

Hi,
The fish in photo 1 is male, and the fish in 3 is female. Cichlid sexing is done by length and shape of dorsal fin. Males dorsal fins are always pointed and females are rounded. Fins on male fish will be longer as well.

The dorsal fin thing is really not a great way to sex fish. There are a number of factors outside of sex that will affect the shape and size of a dorsal fin such as genetics, health, size, and it may have been bitten.

Jaguar males have more dots and no vertical bars when adults. The females will keep their vertical bars as they mature. Males will get bigger, but is hard to tell unless they were the same size at one point.

Also, jaguars are some of the strongest fish you could get. That severum is likely going to get ripped apart.

Yes they will be moved I’ve kept fish for many years even though these severums I’ve got to be careful what to put with as they are really agressive they have beaten my 8” green saums up quite bad lol

I'm surprised they have lasted any amount of time. All jaguars that I've ever kept were insane.

Here’s my male and female jag pair. Like most people have stated females tent to keep there bars where as the males are more “spotted” in appearance. Going by your photos picture 1 is 1000% a male. The other fish in pictures 2&3 I’d be pretty confident in saying you have a female. The dark bars for me are the give away. Nice fish and best of luck !
