A little tip to share with others that have a black thumb. I needed something to subdue the lighting in my Tetra/Cory tank. I actually killed water sprite! I ordered this Marineland Plastic Bamboo to float on top and it looks good. Not fake. Not good for bettas being that it’s plastic but works great for my guys. Just thought I’d share with others.

Thanks! I killed duckweed. Who does that? Lol!
I mentioned elsewhere that I'd been sanitising some fish equipment recently, had put some things in a bucket of bleach solution outside, then ended up leaving it there for a few days because I came down with a nasty flu-type virus. When I went to pour it out 2- 3 days later, found some thriving, healthy, bright green duckweed in it. In bleach solution!

Being able to kill that stuff is pretty impressive in its own right ;)

Indeed, I got duckweed and frogbit mixed up in a thread and @AdoraBelle Dearheart said this about duckweed, made me laugh but at the same time

Seriously never knew duckweed can survive bleaching!!!

But yeah, is an impressive feat killing duckweed, no mean feat really.

Bearing in mind it took me about a week to get rid of all my duckweed from one of my tank at one point, getting rid of each and every single tiny bit of duckweed, became an obsession at one point honestly! Was forever eyeing up that tank with one eye and armed with net at the ready to pounce:lol:

Yep, really annoying but impressive on its survival instincts!

By the same token, I used two worming meds and an antibacterial (eSHa products for anyone curious) on a 57 gallon, and it seemed to kill off the duckweed. It might still creep back from some dried out bits, but it was duckweed and elodea (pondweed!) that died back while more delicate plants like vallis, swords and water lettuce that survived.

Sometimes, you just can't make sense of it

I once had some completely dehydrated and dead on the lid of a tank. I swear when it came into contact with water it rehydrated and took off again.
I'm absolutely positive that it can rehydrate and begin growing again. It's the only explanation for how it can reappear when you've seemingly hunted down every single fleck of it, which it sounds as though many of us have done repeatedly when trying to get rid of duckweed! Some tiny dried out piece under the tank rim, or on a net or something, and boom - it's back!

Salvinia does the same thing. I removed all of the Salvinia from my 10g betta tank, because it caused a real bad bacteria bloom. (Apparently a little piece survived, and has been growing ever since...)

Duck weed is evil.

I am just as impressed with java moss. Have you every completely dehydrated it and then put it back in water to see it grow? (Did it once just to see if the rumors were true - they definitely were!)

I had that happen too. Funny, as soon as I said I killed it, I found some behind the filter intake. Just a few tiny leaves.

Bamboo is pretty invasive in the ground. The previous owners of my home planted some and it's now absolutely towering! Really dense too so actually a good screen for smoke or other pollutants.
