Dear ALl,

Greeting from Greece. I was wondering if i could ask you some questions referring to Blue Guramis breading.

How can i know when a female blue Gurami is having eggs?
How often do they produce eggs?
Is there any method to make them produce eggs and to be introdused to a male?

Thank you very much

Hello, Sotirios. Can you tell us the species of gourami you have? There are several different kinds known as "blue gourami" with slightly different breeding habits. Also, if you could tell us about how your tank is set up (size, plants, decorations, filter) it would help us give you good advice.

Generally, Gouramis are bubble nesters. The male builds a nest at the surface out of bubbles, usually in floating vegetation. The male will then move the female under the nest, where she will lay her eggs as the male fertilizes them. Females usually will not produce eggs without a male present.

Thomas

Thank you Thomas for your answers.

I have a tank of 38 liters with live plantation.
My Gouramis are both same king. I have attached a picture.

Those are one of the colour variations of 3 spot gourami. They are a big fish, way to big for 38 litre tank, I'm afraid.

There is more information on this species here, including information on breeding them. But you'll need a bigger tank for both breeding and keeping the fish in long term.

Beautiful fish! Yes, they should really have a bigger tank, 55 gallons (200 liters) or so. The site essjay linked will have information about breeding, too. Give them a big enough tank with lots of plants (including some floating plants), 2 females and one male, and they'll take care of the rest.
