Hello TFF, My friend just give me this swordtail,
He is over 3.8 inches long. (Cant see well from a picture)

males 4 inches, females 5 inches, but most don't get that big.
sizes do not include the tail.

That depends on the swordtail strain how big they get.
Of course, most commercial strains don´t get that large in an average tank, you´re right about that.
But certain strains (both wild and fancy) can become pretty large no matter the space they're offered.
