Hello, We got a betta fish - a dragon scale male, in October. Its a 3 gallon aquafarm - Back to the roots tank. We have a heater in the tank for him.

We noticed a couple weeks ago that he had a yellow shiny coat on his body (he is blue with red fins), he was not swimming at all, just floating on the surface and his fins did not look normal either. Did one dose (5 days) of Furan-2 treatment with all the recommended water changes based on LFS.

Now, the yellow in his body seems to have reduced. But he is still not swimming around. Just floating in one corner of the tank, where we feed him. We feed him dry pellets. 4-5 pellets twice a day. The only time he even seems to be moving is when we go to feed him.

I called the fish food store, they just asked me to repeat this Furan-2 treatment till he is normal again.. Is this the right approach ? Should I change meds / add epsom salt etc and see ? Any tips is helping Dragon feel betta again is appreciated!

Thanks !

Dont treat with meds if you dont know the cause

Do a 75% water change.

Reduce feeding long term to 2 pellets once a day.

How often do you do water changes and how much water do you change each time?

Did you cycle the tank? How did you cycle it?

What are your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels?

Post a picture and video of the fish.
If the video is too big post it on YouTube and give us the link

Thank you very much for the fast response. I am sad that I did not discover this wonderful forum earlier.

>Dont treat with meds if you dont know the cause
The local fish store mentioned that this was a fin rot and needs a treatment and recommended Furan-2

> Do a 75% water change.
I added a dose of Furan-2 this evening. is it okay to do the change now?

> Reduce feeding long term to 2 pellets once a day.
Will do

> How often do you do water changes and how much water do you change each time?
We do weekly changes, between 50-75%

> Did you cycle the tank? How did you cycle it?
The tank has been on for about 7 months now. So I assume a yes here. If there is a good way to test it please let me know.

> What are your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels?
I dont have a kit, I have ordered a Tetra 6 in 1 strip, It is going to take a few days to arrive.

He is not moving much so the videos are not so good.

The first photo is taken on Apr 27 before treatment. All other stuff was taken just now.

Oh dear. He is very ragged. Yes do the water change, if the meds didnt help the first time daily water changes if 75% will be helpful. Have you tried aquarium salt?
@Colin_T can maybe help

We get filtered water from the store for us to drink. We use the same water for our betta and add imagitarium biological booster and same brand betta water conditioner. I will do a 75% water change now.

>Have you tried aquarium salt?
I will go to the store to buy this tomorrow. Is there a recommendation on the quantity? I have a 3 gallon tank

Thanks again for your response.

I would do 1 heaped table spoon. That's what I have been doing for my betta in my 3.5. Maybe 1 and a half....

Dissolve the salt in a cup of water before adding it to the tank:)

If rock salt is cheaper you can use that also, it's the same thing. Just make sure it doesn't have iodine added

Indeed ragged but maybe could save it. Don't go mad and throw everything at it ! Tempting, but I think great water, good food and peace will hopefully perk it up, tho don't expect immediate changes.

Thanks so much for all the responses.

Here is our strategy:
1. 50% water change daily.
2. Max 3-4 pellets food once a day (New Life Spectrum - Betta - Small Pellet 0.5mm-0.75mm)
3. Discontinue Furan-2 meds.
4. Start Salt treatment.

Please let me know if this is a good plan and if we need to add/remove any steps.

Thanks so so much for the kindness and the help. We love Dragon and want to help him get better.

Looks good but I'd say max of three pellets, four is too much :)

Hi again,

We tried everything as suggested and followed our strategy. He seemed to be moving a bit yesterday, but all of today, back to square 1. Not moved an inch except to eat 3 pellets. And now, he is almost floating sideways and not able to keep himself upright.

Help !

Pics? I'm sorry he may not make it. Is he bloated?

I assumed he lost some of his scales there, but now it looks suspicious.. Is that whats making him sick?
