This saltwater fish grows to about 4 inches long

Here are some pictures I took of the blue mandarin fish back in 2006-2008. The last picture shows the sea horses and blood shrimp they were kept with at the pet shop.

These are pictures of the green or spotted mandarin fish from the same time. The fish were only about 1-2 inches long.

Gorgeous. Looks like it was hand painted.
 
Well this will change your mind. They are a pain in the backside to get to feed and only do well in established tanks with lots of live rock, macro algae (caulerpa, halimeda), and lots of little organisms living on the rocks.

You can't keep them with big fish or fast moving fish, and most of them die within a few months of being bought.
 
The Mandarin Fish has a poisonous slime coat, are difficult to feed, and don't live long. As the old saying goes: "Beauty is only skin deep."
