Hello forum. I haven't been in the hobby since the advent of social media, forums or even computers and what a great source of info. Thought I would join this one to learn some new stuff and update my fish keeping skills. So,, I have a couple Trigonostigma espei that have presented with symptoms that appear to be velvet or saprolegniasis. I started with one individual who had a couple spots I originally thought was fungus. I treated with erythromycin to which there was no change. I continued to research and thought maybe it was saprolegniasis, so I did a course of ich-x. Nothing. I have now just completed a round of general cure thinking it might be velvet and there is still no change. I lost one and have another that looks worse for the wear. Not eating and pretty lethargic. They are in a 20 long planted tank with weekly 1/3 water changes. All other fish are fine. Any ideas? Thank you

Any chance of a picture that clearly shows the spot?
Also a short video of the fish swimming about?

Erythromycin is an anti-biotic that only treats bacterial infections. It does absolutely nothing to fungal infections.

Anti-biotics should only be used on known bacterial infections that have not responded to normal medications/ treatments. Improper use/ mis-use of anti-biotics has lead to drug resistant bacteria that kill people, animals, birds, fish and reptiles.

----------------------
Ich-x contains Malachite Green and Formaldehyde.
Malachite Green kills external protozoans like whitespot, velvet, costia, chilodonella and trichodina, but does nothing to fungus.

Formaldehyde doesn't do much to fungus either.

----------------------
General Cure contains Metronidazole and Praziquantel.
Praziquantel treats tapeworm in all animals and fish and does nothing to fungus.

Metronidazole is another Anti-biotic designed to treat people. It can be used to treat internal protozoan infections in fish but should only be used as a last resort for the same reasons as stated under Erythromycin.
Metronidazole does nothing to fungus.

----------------------
Fungus normally gets into open wounds and can be treated with salt (2 heaped tablespoons of rock salt, sea salt or swimming pool salt per 20 litres of water), or with Methylene Blue. However, you need to identify the problem before using any more chemicals/ medications so post some pictures and I will try to identify the actual issue.

For some reason my videos don't show up in my library when I'm attaching files, but here are a couple screen shots from the video

[/bQUOTE. Forgive my tech challenges. I don't see a way to post videos, but I tried to post photos as well. Let me know if these load

Having trouble with this attaching from my phone. Let me try something else.

Upload the videos to YouTube then copy & paste the link here. We can go to YouTube to view them.

I'm having some difficulty with uploading on youtube at the moment. That part is going to have to wait. I have done a bit of research and others have used api fungus cure for this problem. I only want to use it if it's safe for shrimp.

I don't know what the ingredients are.

Invertebrates like shrimp and crabs are sensitive to copper based medications but also suffer from the chemicals in most medications.

Salt is safe for shrimp.

If you have to use a chemical with shrimp, either move the shrimp out and treat the tank or use a half dose of medication and hope it works.

This is a screenshot from the vid. Sorry it's not clear.

Thank you. How is salt on my plants?

This thread does not need to remain open. There are 2 threads about this and I will use the one at the following link.
