I have like this dust that settles on the bottom of my aquarium I have no idea what it is or what its source is. I know its not carbon because I do not use it. I have a dirt substrate under my sand that's all I could think it is. Is it an algae help me please

Can you post a photo?

I agree posting a photo would help a lot
It is saying the file is too large any other way to upload one?

set your camera's resolution to its lowest setting and take some more pictures, then try posting them.

what device are you using tff on? it should say to upload as a thumbnail pic. try finding that, if you do, click that, and hen post. it should work cause it worked for me.

Thx for the pic. Colin t, maybe you could check out what this is? I am not sure what caused this and what it happens to be exactly. Do your fish seem to be eating it or seem to be affected by it? If not, then I would get to the bottom of this slowly. If yes, then you need to find the answer quickly!

No they are not affected by it. It's just an eye sore.

I did some research. Have you cleaned your tank recently? In the past 1 week? Also, do your fish produce a lot of biological waste or poop? If yes, the reason might be debris buildup. You might want to caution with that because it may cause ammonia poisoning. Another possible case would be white fuzz algae. If you look closely and find it a bit fuzzy, that may be the case. You can simply remove this by vacuuming the gravel, but it probably will come back again. Good luck!!

I don't believe it is fish waste and I did a 75 percent water change today and I vacuum most of it but within a day it comes back

Ok, it might be the algae..... if there is any further improvement, let me know. I'll do some more research. Also, do you think the eye sore is caused by the buildup or just another reason?

Oh, I almost forgot. What type of filter do you have right now? Is it powerful? Also, what is your aquarium stocked with? Either way, you could try filtering it out? I can't possibly guarantee that it'll work. Possibly it wouldn't. But you could try though this is a really primitive and stupid idea.

I am still not sure what this might be. But do you have any bottom feeders like plecos? If not, maybe you can secure that it's algae and get one if possible conditions are available.

First, are we talking about the dark stuff primarily on the rock but some on the gravel next to the rock? Or something else?

Second, a few more photos that may be closer and more level with the substrate would help.

Have you changed your filter or done anything different recently?
