Can anyone tell me what this bump on my goldfish is? I’m not sure if it is just scar tissue or something to worry about. He’s about 2 years old and currently living with one more male in a 29G tank. They will be moving to a 45G after Santa brings it to me. Water changes done weekly, parameters 0, 0 and usually around 40 a few days after cleaning. No illnesses or diseases ever. Temp about 72F. Thanks in advance. Oh, bump started about 6 weeks ago and has grown a little very slowly.

Can you provide us with a couple of pictures from different angles so we can see what you are talking about? All I see are orange scales. :)

I’m sorry. I hope these are better.

It is either a tumor or the start of an ulcer. How long has it been like that?

Wipe the inside of the glass down and do a 75% water change & gravel clean the substrate each day for a week. Clean the filter if it hasn't been done in the last 2 weeks.

Feed lots of plant matter to the fish and if you can find a bird or fish vitamin supplement (in a powder form) sprinkle some of that on frozen food and feed to the fish once a day.

If it gets worse you might need medicated food for Goldfish ulcer disease. If it's a tumour there is nothing you can do.

Thanks so much for the info. I actually found an aquatic vet and just left his clinic. That was fun! Never took a fish before but this one is so special to me. He said it’s just a cyst that will eventually pop. Vet said quite common on goldfish 3 years and up. After it pops I’m suppose to swab it with hydrogen peroxide. So glad it wasn’t a tumor. That was my worry since it had been there a over a month. Thanks again!

I don't mean to go against the vet but cysts are normally fluid filled sacks. That looks like more than fluid. Just monitor it and if it goes white in the middle (like a pimple) and then red around the edges, it is an ulcer.

You could try to pop it with a needle and drain the gunk out. That way you prevent it popping in the tank and possibly releasing nasty stuff in the water. If you do this make sure you use a sterile needle and disinfect the area before and after. Do lots of big water changes to keep the number of microscopic organisms down while it heals. :)

Thank you so much for all of your help. I really do appreciate it. I’m watching it closely.
