My Journey To Fish Keeping...

I'm not sure :(

The Dad was eating some of them.

I only seen the one swimming around and some of the ones she was birthing didn't seem like babies at all.

My second female platy is also pregnant and should deliver any day now.

I hope the little guys survive, my tank has become survival of the fittest! lol.

Will post pics as I see them :)

A few should survive if they can find decent hiding places and your last full tank shots looked like there were places to hide.
Sometimes when it's their first brood or they have been stressed in any way they can drop deformed eggs that never developed properly into fry.
Out of my first lot only 1 survived and to be honest I didn't even know it had been born until it was about 3 weeks old when it had got some colour! Subsequent batches increased in number of survivors.

Thats what i'm thinking.. that the first broad she had was all duds except for 1.

The fry she was dropping didn't look like anything flish like when it came out.

My second one I placed in a guppy breeder, going to see if she drops overnight.
She's displaying the same behaviours.

We will see if that one lone survivor grows up.

I took the platy out of the Guppy Breeder lastnight (cause it just seemed wrong to leave her there overnight) and She's not fat anymore..

I'm sure sure if she gave birth to her fry or not.. guess we will find out who survived once they start to develop.

Will post pics if they do!

Hand feeding my snail this morning!

What am I going to do with all these!! She had 26 of them :)

Well unless you are going to keep buying tanks every month to accommodate them all - you'd be best letting them fend for themselves in the main tank. Some will be predated, but the strongest and fastest will survive.
Just be aware that this will be a 4-5 weekly occurrence now she's started and if you have any other females in there you could be in for a population explosion at some point in the not too distant future!

Ya, Thats what i was thinking..

My friend wants a couple as well as my sister.
So Im thinking of saving 5 of them..

How "durable" are they as little fry?

Do some die due to natural causes or should i just keep 5-6 in this guppy breeder and let the rest go to be eaten?
Sounds cruel but its nature..

Whats your thoughts?

I have a Gourami, ADF and well the parents..

I'm sure they will be eaten  :p

As long as there are hiding places some are likely to survive. The guppy breeder won't do for any length of time to be honest. Plus the water quality won't change with the main tank water changes. Unless you've got a cycled fry grow out tank ready I'd let them back into the main tank and see how it goes.

Yea, I don't have a fry tank at all. Just this main tank.

How long could they survive in the guppy breeder?
Just long enough for them to grow large enough to transfer to my friends community tank?
Or a month for my sisters new tank to be cycled?

I think 26 fry in that small space for any length of time is a no-go really, Candace.
You'd have to do so many mini water changes daily and it would be too cramped for them by far.

ok, i'l leave them in there long enough for my friend to see and then they will fend for themselves in the large tank

Thanks for the advice!

So people want these fish, so i've decided to accommodate the Multiple Tank Syndrome and buy another small tank.

What Size can I get away with saving about 10 fish to semi-adult hood so that someone can take it after?

Can I get away with a 3.5 - 5gal or do I need to go as large as a 10?

Thoughts?

Luckly this time I have filter media and water from an established 15gal tank so starting and cycling this knew one should be faster so that these little guys have a chance.

Well if that's they way you want to go, I'd go for a bigger tank tbh cos, with the best intentions, people say they'll have them when they are cute, but when the time comes and they realise everything that's involved, they may change their minds and then you'd be stuck with growing platies in a tank that's not adequate really so get the biggest you can - ideally it should be 15 G for platies. I have only 4 in my 15 G along with some amano shrimp and assassin snails.
However the question arises what are you going to do when she drops the next lot and the lot after that etc etc?
I truly am not trying to rain on your parade - just pointing out the reality of livebearers - once they start breeding it seem like they'll never stop!
