I have been searching for close to a week now for the answer to the above question, But every LFS and online source I've checked so far has a different name. I'm supposed to go on the hunt tomorrow but I honestly don't know what I'm looking for. To me they are just stunning but I can't walk into the lfs with that as a description so please help.

Bentos tetra, Ornate tetra (Hyphessobrycon bentosi)

Bentos tetra, Ornate tetra
Scientific name: Hyphessobrycon bentosi
Origin: Amazon river basin
Size: 4cm/1.6”
Tank size: 60cm/24”
Water parameters: pH 6-7.5, temperature 24-28°C/75-82°F
Notes: A smaller alternative to the Bleeding heart tetra, there’s now a new variant available called Bentosi ‘White Fin’ which looks even better.

Wow! They are stunning! Would love to see some irl.

KirkyArcher has it right.  I have them and they are a lot of fun to watch.  Very fast swimmers!  Sometimes they will spar by circling each other and really flaring their fins!  Very cool fish.  My LFS called them Candy Cane Tetras.  They also go by White Tip Tetras.  Here is a pic of one of mine...Good Hunting...let us know how you do!

Do they really stay at 4cm/1.6" because I need them to be shrimp safe and that's the perfect size.

Found them in one west London FS and they are going for £3.80 per fish. Just my luck that they are the most expensive tetra I've come across. Or maybe I just haven't bought tetras in a while and haven't noticed the price rise, For our American Cousins that's $7.60 per fish depending on when and where you convert the currency.

Perhaps they'll have an xmas sale?

I'm sure I've seen them some months back at my local Maidenhead Aquatics, but not any lately.

More names for one tetra...

White tip, Bentos, Ornate, False rosy, Pink white tip, white fin ornate, robert's, flag, white flag or white fin, sickle tetras. It'd be hilarious if it wasn't kinda sad

You can add Bentosi, Bentosi White Tip, and Candy Cane to the list! :)

i was sold these fish as bleeding heart tetra, that might explain why the heart shape did not appear on my fish

Please allow me to introduce "The 26 Names & Counting Tetra"

Half day at work so I went to three different LFS' and yup you guessed it, the first two had very different tetras in under one of the names we mentioned. I was skeptical by the time I reached my third and final lfs and there they were, dull looking but extremely playful. On my way home I thought to myself,..

"Everyone else is rushing around buy last minute gifts and here I am with 9 tetras feeling like I just achieved something significant"

I've already bought every gift I needed too for everyone else. These are for me

Plop and drop after an hour so ETA 30 more mins and counting.

Very nice, once they settle down in their new home, am sure their colours and characters will shine through.

Nice!

That's awesome!! Congrats!! Let us know how they are doing once you have them settled. Tank mates?
