I really like the hardscape in the tank and think it'll look great once the plants grow a bit

I would definitely reccomend a background though - your fish will be much more comfortable and the tank will look a so much better. Keep it dark an keep it simple.

Thanks, yeah, I'm trying to get a good background but can't seem to find a good one yet...
This may seem stupid, but don't the fish get frustrated (if fish can get frustrated, LOL) trying to swim at the plants/rocks in the background (if you have plants or rocks in the background)?  I know I would...

I think there bright enough to know there not real plants - like saying if we painted a door on your wall would you constantly try and get in it.

Having a background makes the fish feel more secure as they don't feel like they can be got at from all sides - it provides a darkness and cover behind them. The safer the fish feel the more natural behaviour you will see from them.

If your struggling to find the perfect one plenty of people here use a blak bin bag which would be a virtually free temporary fix and give you time to find the perfect one.

+1

I've never seen a background I like better than black. It sets everything off and makes it look rich.

Thanks everyone!  I know of a good black/reversible blue background I could get for cheap.  I'll probably pick it up next time I go to PetSmart.

OK, so many of you have seen the tank w/ black background...I'm going to get some Red Ludwigia today as well as a few more fish.  I'll post pics later.

I ended up getting some Telanthera Cardinalis.  VERY small at present, but it should get bigger!!
What do you think?

Wow...I'm looking back at how this tank has evolved...:) now the old no background/only green plants setup looks bad LOL...

Alright, all the cardinalis died... :( LOL, but I got some more Amazon Sword plants...pic in my new signature :)

Sorry to hear about your cardinalis, I managed to kill anubias lol!
The tank looks great. Doesn't a black background just transform everything? I have a bin bag on mine lol and the green from the plants just jumps out!

Thanks Ny82, and yes, the background makes a world of difference!  I didn't know my tank once I had put it on!!  LOL

When I look back at pics of it without a background, it just looks wrong or bare lol and it's only been a week!
That's a good thing, makes it all worthwhile when you step back and think wow.

Just bought two more bunches of plants for $3.99...awesome value and completely transforms my tank!  I am thrilled.  Pic in my new signature.
