Does anyone buy an uninspiring black Plakat male on purpose.? I didn't but I have one. He was my first betta, I thought he was female. He is aggresive but at the same time a really lively freindly fish.
I have a blue and red one to, bought with a group of girls. He is quite placid qnd lives longside the girls quite happily.
Point is I didn't want either of them I wanted females. I now know what I am looking at and wont make the same mistake again.
With all the fancy pants males available is there anyone who wants these fish?
Not mine mind just in general (that being said anyone in the area who can offer the blue and red one a good home let me know).

I may be interested.

Can you upload a picture?

How much will he cost?

there you go. Photo135.jpg

Where is the rest of his tail?

Sorry, I already have a betta that has VERY similar colours to that so I will not be having him.

Thanks anyway!

That is all of his tail, he is a Plakat male not a fancy one. This is how a wild betta would probably look, or near as.

Shame that I don't have the tank space, as he is a beauty! I have a soft spot for plakat males :)

this would appear to be the problem. They are nice fish but due to the fact that they need to be kept on there own they dont stand a chance against the more fancy boys. I think they are a good addition to a community tank and can go in with fish that may otherwise nip the fins of the more fancy fish.

I would very happily buy a single male betta plakat or otherwise to keep on his own and have done on many occasions and still do, it's not necessarily the markings/colour or fancy finnage on these fish that make me want them but more the personality, bettas are truly a personable fish

I much prefer keeping single males than a group of females too, would love to give your boy a home but you are too far away

plakats are actually my fave!

I do not have a seperate tank to keep him in anyway. Besides, I have a betta with a big, fancy tail so it wouldn't work out!

Nice to hear it betta fish. Maybe there is hope for these fish. What they lack in fancy finnage they make up in personality. My oldest Plakat lets me pick him up out of his tank and you cant say that about to many other fish.
It is female bettas that I am most into and the plakat males were bought as mistakes that being said there is so much going for them I dont know why breeders slip them in with batches of females to get rid. Lets face it if you are going to breed these fish you should know a thing or to about sexing the youngsters.

That appears to be a blue female. The pectorial fins seem a little long for a female but everything else screams female.

I have other females with long pectoral fins, however I cant see any evidence of an egg spot on this one. All my other females have obvious ones so I still dont know. Here are some more pictures one of the suspect male/female and another suspect. The picture quality isnt great I dont know how to get it better due to max file size.

The pics do look like females but I agree the pectorals are quite long, one way of finding out it separating said fish into either a separate tank or breeder trap with either half a poly cup or almond leaf as long as the water is relatively still most males will begin to build a bubble nest within a couple of days, females do occasionally build bubble nests but it is not very common and they usually do it if they release eggs and no male is around, another thing is to take a mirror and look at the flare most males will show a full flare when shown a mirror and will get quite wound up by their reflection! lol but any you do think are suspect are def worth separating into solitary confinement so you can access their behaviour. Females can be very aggressive to one another too and need to be in larger groups to curb this aggression, or at least reduce it somewhat, minimum 6 in a group preferably more, not sure how many you have?
