I want to get some shrimp for my newly cycled 100 litre community tank. First fish went in last weekend, 6 skirt tetras and 6 peppered corys, all doing well. Planning to add a couple of platy and 8 cardinal tetras over coming months. Read loads about the common aquarium shrimp choices, and have loads of conflicting opinions! Obviously I don't want anything that'll get eaten, or anything that'll attack and frighten the fish; just an interesting few shrimp who will be happy to help with a little cleaning! Cherry, Amano, Ghost, Yamoto, other?

Thanks!

Basically Amano and Yamoto shrimp are the same shrimp ;) , but are a good option in that they wont successfully raise young in an aquarium situation, the down side of this is once they die you need to buy more if you want to contiue keeping them.
Any of the Crystal shrimp (red/ black or all their other morphs) wont survive the heat for the tetras so rule them out entirely. I know you had not mentioned them but just for future refenace ;) .

Cherry shrimp will breed like underwater rabbits if the conditons are faverable to to them, and I have not yet found a tank condition that they dont like  , and I wouldnt rely on tetras to pick off enough shrimplets to really impact on the shrimp population once they really hit their straps.

Ghost shrimp I can't really advice on but I do know to be careful. Ghost shrimp is plastered onto almost any clear looking shrimp whether its a ghost or not.

My personal choice would be the Amano, or if you have the time and pateince (patience for when you need to start removing excess shrimp), cherry shrimp. But with the cherry shrimp I would try for something a little different instead of the standard red. You can get Chocolate orange, yellow even blue cherry shrimp and the red and yellow also come in Rili pattern. They are expensive but they are much easier to on sell once you need to thin numbers :good: .

Thanks for the great advice; added two rather large Yamoto (Amano) shrimp today, all is well so far!

Ahh I was gana say a blue armoured shrimo, gets to about 6 inches but are completely harmless, or a bamboo shrimp lol

I expected the shrimp to shed skins, but not within 24 hours of being added to the tank!!! Amazing to watch.....

Yes, seeing a shrimp shed is interesting to see, its also fascinatng watching the shrimplets hatch from their eggs  .

Although with Amanos, unless you put the babies in salty water, they will all die.

My amanos always hide to shed. I would love to see them do it. In any case they are very nice shrimp and make good tank mates for all my fish.
