hello everyone I just added a new member to my aquarium a white dotty pleco. Currently I have 4 juvenile silver dollars, my question is what's the best way to take care of a pleco? For the past 3 days I've been putting algea waffers and my silver dollars been eating them like crazy while the pleco barely had any.

here is a photo of the little guy

Some plecos grow huge so it really is a good idea to read up on fish before you buy them - then you know exactly how to care for them and if they are suitable for your tank and its current inhabitants.

Plecos need a veg diet as well as meaty foods (frozen bloodworm etc) . They will feed on almost anything. You should drop your algea wafers in at night to give them a chance to eat if you feel they are not getting their fair share. I drop my algea wafers in while i am feeding the flake then the others tend to ignore the sinking wafers and my plecos dash out and claim them!

Each pleco will have a preference of veg but most of the like courgette (mine like theirs peeled), mine also like sweet potato(zapped in the microwave for a few secs to make it a little softer) sweet peppers, cucumber, broccoli and melon! Its a case of putting it in and they will let you know what they like!!

Hmmm....I'm no expert on this but my spotted plecos absolutely love algae-based sinking pellets. They're not really good for other fish but they seem to be excellent for plecos.

thanx for the info. he's in my 55 gallon tank plenty of room to grow until I upgrade to 100 gallon

its interesting i didnt know they could feed on real veggies i was only told to use waffers

King British Plecostomus Tablets are a winner for my bristlenose! He can't get enough of them and they're the staple in his diet. My pleco doesn't get along with courgettes but he loves cucumber and melon! He also likes lettuce, sweet potato, chicory, broccoli, carrots, peas and parsnip! :good:

Yep. Don't forget to also feed him bloodworms and brine shrimp, the meatier foods every week as well. Also bottom feeder tablets are good to add as well ;) :good:

Here's some more detailed info on your new little fella.
