Hello everybody,

I have a huge problem.

I checked my tank just now, and saw this:

(Or see picture attached)

My bigger bristlenose catfish is bleeding!
He usually chills on the heater, but it's turned off right now because I'm cooling the tank since it got a little overheated. (I bumped the heater, so it went from 25 to 25C)
There has been no change to the tank what so ever(paper wallpaper of the back was taken of, but no contact with water.)

The water is normal, everything is normal!! But why is he bleeding? :(

He is usually a calm little guy, around three inches. I have two of them, he is the bigger one. They usually never fight, if they do, he wins.

SOS!!!
What sould i do?

Thank you for your help:

Tom

He needs to come out,NOW! He needs to go in QT by himself. With that large a wound, he will be an irresistible snack from even the most peaceful fish.

Do you have some malachite green on hand? If you put 3 drops for every ten gallons that should help prevent secondary infection. That is a HUGE owie! Poor guy  ! Someone in your tank did that to him, by the looks of it, please list your full stock.

If you leave him in that tank, everybody else will nibble him to death. That looks like it goes into muscle tissue and he is not gonna be able to get away or stand up for himself.

I do water changes every 2 weeks, change about 20% of the water. I leave them in there- because they are calm and the water level only drops by 10cm.
I have a 60L tank, 2x 2 inch clown loaches, a full grown 30 cm Angelfish, and the two bristlenose. I do not have any medication on hand, but will take him out the tank right after I finish writing this. I hope he gets better... :(

you have serious problems at the moment.

1 - that looks like a heater burn, not dangerous really on its own, but if (and probably when) it gets infected, that wound will turn very nasty very6 quickly and will kill the BN.

2 - you are massively overstocked which isnt going to help the infection factor.

3 - you say your water is normal, can you post your exact results? specifically for ammonia and nitrite.

4 - waterchanges of 20% every two weeks is not enough with your curent stocking, which again isnt going to help that wound.

What you need to be doing now is multitasking. You need to be doing large, frequent waterchanges to keep your water clean to aid healing of thyat wound, you need to be finding new homes for the angel and clown loaches, and you need to be testing regularly to keep an eye on ammonia.

How long have you had the tank/fish in it?

How long have you had the tank/fish in it?

My parameters are:
ammonia: 0
nitrite: 0
nitrate: 6
ph: 6,5

I changed the water 4 days ago, and add the appropriate ammount of Tetra aquasafe.

I am just looking into getting a new tank, don't have the money for it yet. I've had the bristlenose for 3 years, The angelfish was about an 3 cm big when i got it and had it for 2 years, and the loaches I had for 11 months.

Is there anything more I can do ?

You can save him, but you are heavily stocked for a tank that size. If you even have a small 5 gallon spare tank that you can isolate him in, that would be perfect. Take him out, put his fav hiding place in the small tank and change 75% of the water in it every day.

On to your main tank, hun. Clowns grow to be tremendous fish. 12 inches for males and closer to 14 for females. Plus, they are thick, busy fish. You are fine for a while, I'd say six months or so, but ya need a bigger tank to keep the fish you have got .Bristlenose's are territorial, and only get more so as they age. He may have been accidentally burned by the heater,or have been forced into it by the other BN. I am still doubtful it is a burn, as it is really deep looking.

The choice to euthanize is never an easy one, but is one YOU will have to make.

I don't know, he looks really bad. I put him in a 3.5 gallon tank for now, will see how he does for an hour.

does the 3.5 gallon have a mature filter on it? if not it will be even more dangerous than the one he is in now.

by frequent i meant daily or even twice daily, to keep the water CLEAN, not 4 days ago.

He died. (Yes, the tank was a proper tank - Aqueon Evolve) I put him in there, but then just stopped moving. I made sure he was dead - then flushed him down. I hope he is in better place now... RIP Bristlenose catfish. :-( :-( :-( :-( :-(

Thanks for your support anyway- Tom.

i know youre upset and theres nothing you can do about it now (and i am sorry for your loss) but you really shouldnt flush dead fish. They can get stuck in the pipes, and can infect water sources.

Now you have one less fish to worry about so you can get started on sorting out your tank :) takwe your mind off things.

I am keeping all my fish, I love them. I am tough however looking to get a 50-70 gallon new tank.

Thank you for your help & support.

their outer bodies growth stops but the organs dont..thus killing them. If you love them put them to a better home. Reasearch what you stocking levels will be BEFORE you buy your next tank, if not sure ask on here, someone will happily help you x

Sorry about your BN xx :rip:
