So, I currently have 2 female bettas - lavender and a pastel green. I need three more, and I'm trying to pick what colors I should get, I know for sure I want a turquoise as well. What other colors do you think I should get? And whats your favorite color for a male Halfmoon?

Also:
I'm thinking of trying to breed bettas in a couple of months, when I feel I'm ready. For now, I'm trying to figure out what all I'll need. So far, I know:
~50 Betta Jars
~Frozen Bloodworms
~Almond Leaves
~Brine Shrimp
~Sponge Filter
~Heater
~Thermometer
~20 gallon grow up tank
~10 gallon spawn tank

what am I missing??

Baby food baby bettas are too small for newly hatched brines and wont accept anything that dsnt wiggle (normaly)

Baby foods are : infusorua and microworms these need to be made before spawning about a week before so their numbers grow :)

Also ive never had a hm mainly cause i dont like them but colour wise one like dm's ice would be nice :) aqua colour with white out line on fins :)

Oops! I forgot to put microworms because I already have two cultures for my Killi fry!

Awesome! Thanks! Wanted to make sure I wasn't forgetting anything!

I'd also just like to add that for the first couple days after they use up their own yolk sacks, you can hardboil an egg, take a little of the yolk, mix it with water and feed them with that. I think you might find this website, or more specifically THIS page of articles, super informative and helpful.

I personally love non-metallic royal blue/steel blue/greens, any color that is with marble or butterfly patterned :p. I'm very picky about my HMs and am more of a plakat person, but if an HM is any of those colors I will probably love it lol.

If you want to breed halfmoons though, just make sure you find a real halfmoon or delta type female (minimum 4 ray branching and SHARP caudal edges!), and not an impostor. :)

The infusoria, i really did not have lucky with wen i tried to make it myself, i have this plant in there along with this other one i got from petsmart, those will culture infusoria right? and brine shrimp, some people say baby bettas can handle then ,that they will rip the apart, ive read this in a book, im not sure if this is ture o.o

When my bettas get here, I'm going to post pictures of the females, would you help me figure out which one(s)would be a good suit??

Uumm not to sure on brins i read even in their hatchling form they r still too big but u get so many different articles its hard to understand whats right and whats wrong i havnt had much luck with infusoria only 2of mine have worked and im nealy out and every time i start a new batch nothing :( ill try the egg yolk thing when i run out even though i have liquifry and fry powder i worry that they wont eat even though they must be eating as i saw the fattest one in there lol

Sure, I'd love to help you pick out which to use for breeding. :)

As for the Brine Shrimp thing, the thing is there are two 'strains' of brine shrimp.. Theres Salt Lake variety and then there's San Francisco Bay I think? Apparently the San Francisco ones are smaller than the Salt Lake variety, so thats why some people say its okay and other's say its not.

When I did my first (and only..) spawn I raised them entirely on egg yolk for the first week and then San Francisco Bay brand BBS until they were pretty darn big (like, past 6 weeks.. never too big for BBS it seems) . Only 6 of my fish got to maturity, and the other fry (about 6 runts) wouldn't eat and died, but there were a lot of other factors that led to having such a small spawn... I don't think it had to do with the BBS only diet.

I'd say to try egg yolk instead of infusoria... Both work but you can be sure that the that the egg yolk is actually food and not bacterial bloom, right? If you mix the egg yolk with water and use a spray bottle and spray it into the tank, the surface tension holds it up and it covers more area so all the fry see it, compared to just using a dropper, where it just sinks.

Also, I tried the Hikari First Bites (fry powder..). They didn't like it.:p

Thanks! I'm still confused on how to tell the number of rays, that's why I'm hesitant to breed... I'll be sure to do the egg yolk then!

I attached an image of a halfmoon female with red lines to mark what the rays are. :) As you can see, they stem from one thick ray and then split into much smaller rays. The more smaller rays you have at the end, the better! For a female to be a true halfmoon/Delta type, she will need a minimum of 4 small rays. :) The attached female goes up to 9 for that section of rays, and even has ray splitting in her dorsal and anal, which is awesome.

In comparison, here's one of my former fish.. She has her own natural red lines, so you can see that her rays only go to 2! She was a traditional plakat, hence the super short, pert little fins and only 2 rays.

Oh!! I get it!!! That makes sense xD thanks!!

I was trying to find a good pic so I could try one of my own, but I couldn't because I'm on my phone, I'll have to try later! (I did find a site that literally said: Down with cups, go bowls!)
