I wanted to see what people thought of Air stones, I have 2 in my tank, I love the look of them but I am not sure they are doing much good, I have a 60 gallon semi-planted tank and I think they are just causing too much current. Also wanted to know if fish can survive without them or is it their main source of oxygen? I'd like to do away with them but I'm not sure if I can. Would my fish survive with a filter alone? If so should I raise the filter to oxygenate the water? Someone please advise me!!!

I recommend them for any freshwater tank. They increase flow and aeration and can save the entire tank if the filter ever stops for some reason, and many fish like them.

ok bc i have a 60 gallon and it has low medium and a high setting. I just think it's too much current and probably not helping my cloud problem either, should I raise the filter to agitate the water? Also my filter is equipped to handle 70 gallons

I run 2 air stones to generate dissolved oxygen for the fish, but I also need to control the level of flow, so to prevent the crazy water flow they can generate I run mine inside capped and vented tubes. This way you get the oxygen dissolved without generating strong water flow.

how do you do that? I'm new to this

You can do it with a simple uncapped tube. You need a tube long about the same depth as the water and with a large enough bore to take an air stone with a little bit ofclearance , and attach a sucker to it to fix it to the glass. Set the tube so that about a inch is above the waters surface, and then drop your air stone inside until it is about an inch from the bottom. The air will bubble up the inside of the tube and draw water in the bottom and pass it slowly over the lip at the top. You can adjust the height of the tube to get more or less water flowing out the top. Here are some easy pics for you.

would that also work if I put the air stone IN my filter? Like right after the filter bag?

sorry scratch that, it's a top fin power filter for 60 gallons
My tank is a marineland, lol

it def doesnt have a biowheel, it has 2 big bags inside of it
Here is a pic of it

these are the cartridges it takes...

OK, got it. You can't put the air stone in the intake, as you will cause cavitation in the pump and it will stop pumping water, and the outflow is(if I am correct) an overflow type. So I can't see any obvious way to integrate your air pump and filter. Sorry

so I can't put the air stone in the overflow? Man, that really sucks, Right now I have one air stone turned on, on the side that the filter is not on so that way there is a calm side and a current side, it seems that my fish like it this way, but I'm going to try and put together your tube and see how they like that, they seem to like the flow of the filter only. Thank you for your help! It is much appreciated!
