Hi, 20gallon long tank, was thinking adding 3 otos in there, cuurrent residents are small cichlids ,does 3 sound ok or do they prefer a larger group ?
Any help on this on greatly appreciated :good:

was originally going to add another BN plec but not sure on tank size etc, have seen bulldog plecs but not sure on suitability so would like these guys, have seen them locally after a very long absence in LFS

What type of Cichlids do you have? Also how long has the tank been established for? It is not a good idea to put the oto's with african cichlids and other dwarf cichlids might harass them in a 20 gallon if not provided enough cover. Most dwarf cichlids are peaceful but they can get very aggressive and usually during spawning. Hope you can tell me how long your tank has been running for and the Cichlids you have.

best off in groups of 6 or more ive got 8 living in my 25g with dwarf cichlids including blue rams bolivian rams apistogramma baenschi and checkerboards cichlids and there fine they have been in there over a year now and in very good health

Hi, cheers for the quick response.
Tank been up and running for over a year now, current residents are as in signature, 2 Multifasciatus, 4 Dwarf Sumbu, and a lazy BN Plec, decor is lots of ocean rock, a pice of Mopani wood and theres sheels and barncle clusters in there also, plantwise theres e few different types of Jave Fern in there.... :good:
Oh yeah and lots of algae

waters probably too hard for them if your keeping shellies in there they need soft acidic to neutral water 6-7.5 pH

the more the merrier really but 3 will be fine. just make sure that you pick out the otos with big fat bellys, this is a sign that they are eating which is the main issue with buying new otos :good:

I picked up 4 today, dripped water in the bag for over an hour, they clung to the glass for an hour but they are all over the place now, swimming in all the water column :good: All going well I might pick up another 3 or 4 on Friday, cool wee fish :good:
:fish:

id wait a week or two before adding to the group. make sure these guys fare OK before adding any new ones. also give the filter a chance to handle the increased bioload.
enjoy your otos. One of my favorite fishes :)
cheers

I was very surprised to see them in my LFS, been absent for a long time. I remember them as being a yellow browny colour but these ones are sort of black with silvery white undersides, they look like wee miniature sharks. They are more active than I realised, seem to have settled in ok, tearing into the algae and resting on the java fern laeves, I was worried that the current residents would give them a hard time, they only chase them away if they land on there shell, the Otos are very fast so no harm done
Cheers for the advice, will wait a week or two before adding another 2 or 3, filtration is good so far, have oversized external filter and also added the small one from 10 gallon tank to keep it's media cycled :good:
