hello everyone, I am having problems yet again with my new Betta, Rusty, we have only had him a few weeks
he was in a 90L with other fish(corys, snails, platy fry) when began acting ill. hiding in plants, and his tail looks ragged and frayed. so i put him in a smaller 48L and I'm doing 50% water change every other fday, although the reading and treble zero. he is laying at the top of the water , lying on the plants to support him, here are some photos

hes lethargic, and i'm not sure if hes eating much, i have seen him eat a little flake food

Are you using any meds? Might be worth trying an internal bad med. His fins are looking a bit sticky from the pics so keep up with large w/c's and i'd consider meds

Aww, poor little guy! Looks so poorly.

That rusty colouring on his body...was that there when you bought him? Just wondering if that's actually his body colouring or could it be he's got velvet disease?

Was only talking about Velvet disease earlier today on another post, so it's fresh in my mind. It causes lethargy, loss of appetite and in the early days there may be signs of scraping/flicking/rubbing against tank objects. It can produce a rusty/gold dust effect on the fish.

Looks like his fins are a bit ragged, too - if you can save him, the fins are not a problem as they repair fairly easily and quickly with regular water changes and a few drops of Melafix.

Hope he'll be ok!

Regards, Athena

thanks athena. i shall try my best to get him better and yes the rustiness was there before we had him, thats why we called him Rusty x

I have added the dose of interpet 7 ( slime and velvet) into the tank, as well as doing water changes.he has started looking better, so we'll see

After struggling for a few days, my beautiful boy, Rusty, passed away in front of me last night, after me watching his every breathefor a few minutes. I'm not having much luck with my pets, as we lost out conure , Pheonix, yesterday too ( flew out window...cant find him) Not feeling great, wish I knew what I was doing wrong with my boys. have lost 3 in 3 months

Aww I'm really sorry to hear that.

If you are buying your fish from the same shop I suggest you change; just in case :)

and oh no for Pheonix; I dread that happening to me. Is there no chance you could find him or put treats out?

I am so sorry...but I too am curious if you are buying them from the same shop? they could have a bad supplier

what is your water like? do you know the hardness and pH? just curious, especially since they all really showed NO signs of illness. just succumb to something. strange.
sad nonetheless. sorry about your loss.
cheers

water levels were and still are
ammonia 0
nitrites 0
nitrates 0.......this rarely leaves 0 as on his own he produces little waste

just have to think of a name for him

so sorry :(

I was thinking about this last night, but how cold is the air around your tank? does it get quite cold at night?

hes a pretty fella :)

they are in the kitchen, so its quite warm outthere. and the temperature doesnt go above 27 in the tank, the thermometer is very good. when i had a coldwater tank, the temp was 24 without a heater! thats why I rehomed them, that and the fct they grew so fast, they now live in a wildlife pond, a friend of my sons has a massive pond in his garden, along with other goldfish and koi.

what do you think of my new boy, i believe he has copper and red colouration.
