Reesy's 20 Gallon Reef Adventure

I am not at the moment, However it has been on order for a while and the company I bought it from have supposedly sent this item out twice.

I will buy some on the weekend if I still do not receive it

sorry if this has been already been mentioned... but this article is quiet interesting and I thought would be worth a read http://en.microcosmaquariumexplorer.com/wiki/Breeding_the_Green_Mandarin

Hi Appleseed,

Thanks for that link, it was a very interesting read and quite alot of good information. I'm not going to be able to breed them in my tank but I will be upgrading to a 70g tank so that this could be a possibility in future :)

Cheers,

Reesy

Breeding them would be intresting :)
Another usefull link (maybe) http://www.melevsreef.com/mandarin_diner.html

Thanks Appleseed, again that was a very interesting read and possible something I could look into doing, however I first have to teach my mandarin to eat these foods lol.

Tank Update.

I have re-arranged the rocks so that I can see if the inhabitants prefer it this way. I have also noticed that the coral is definately bigger than when I first bought it.

Coraline aglea is starting to form on my tank aswell Woo. whcih is great.....right?

Unfortunately there is also normal algea groing on the walls and the back of the tank. Give the tank a thorough algea scraping session and water change and then I'll get some pics up.

Reesy

look forward to the photos :good: you should see the back of my tank, looks like a forest

There is also something that I am unsure of in the tank.

Its only developed since I had changed the rocks the other way around so that this side had sunlight for a change. It doesn't look like aiptasia....well i dont think looks more like a mushroom coral baby. Im just off to clean the tank and i'll take a picture to show you :)

very interesting journal reesy!!!!

I am getting exactly the same tank this weekend. cant wait to begin my marine.

one question though. what is in your back compartments? have u changed it much? Have u adapted it to stop fish or other tankmates getting into the back compartments?

Cheers

Hi Eltz21,

I havn't changed a great deal at all. The only thing I have done in the back it to remove the bio balls that come with it and instead put live rock rubble in there. Bio balls are pretty useless I've been told when it comes to Marine. Well not useless but live rock is a much better source to use.

The problem with fish jumping over. I haven't really had any issues with it. Im not sure if there is acutally room for them to do it when the lid is down. I havn't seen it for a while with no water in it lol.

If you have any more questions feel free to ask :)

Hi Reesy

How do you plan to use you phosphate remover when you get it? I take it you are going to get Rowaphos, it will make things a whole lot easier in regards to beating algea, it's an absolute must imo. Are you going to be getting a reactor or placing it in the tank? If you are putiing it in the tank you could put it in sacks and place it where you have removed the bio-balls, how big is that space?

cheers reesy.

i am sure i will think of loads more when i actually get my tank. ha

thanks :good:

This forum is great for asking questions, loads of very knowledgeable people.

Update.

No new fish Im afraid or corals however I have had a very uneasy experience. When I first had the tank I uploaded a picture of a black circular slug type thing. No one could Identify them however, last night at two hours after lights out I noticed odd black spots on the rock. I quickly put the blue LED's on and sure enough there were 3 of the slug things. They have also grown along with the tank and are now atleast 1" - 2" in diameter! I was well and truely shcoked. I quickly snatched up the camera hit the main lights and snapped a few close ups before they would slighter they way back into they're cracks in the rock. Anyone ID these things as I really need to find out if they could cause any harm to corals or fish for that matter??

First we have all three of them collected on the rock.

Can anyone suggest what these could be or if I can PM anyone who know what these little things could be??

Hi Vic,

I plan on using the back compartment in the bag method as you have mentioned above depending on the size of the bag of course. The back of the tank has 4 compartment as shown in the diagram below. (its not a great diagram but paint is rubbish)

untitled.JPG

Yeloow is where the water enters the back chambers, in here is where the heaters are hidden. The water moves to the blue compartment through a grill in the top of the seperating wall. Here is where the old bio-balls were ment to go but instead contains live rock rubble. The water then moves on to the green compartment at the bottom of the tank via a grill in the wall. In the green compartment I have put more live rock and the carbon that came with the tank. The water will the move through various grills in the next seperating wall into the purple compartment where there are two mini power pumps that circlulate the water back through into the tank.

I am not sure where I should put the Phos remover yet. I think possible at the top of the blue compartment?

Whats your opinion?

Regards,

Reesy89

P.S: Definately the Black scutus thank vic. I'll do abit of reading to see what they are like. Cheers again.
