I've had my black moor fish since February and its been happy since then but a few days ago he was just floating motionless in a corner (he's usually really active) after a few minutes he was normally swimming again but he's done the whole motionless thing quite a lot lately does anyone know whats wrong with him

hi
can you give a bit more info
on your tank set up?
what your feeding?
what your water perameters are like?
and what cleaning routine do you have?

Does he always hang around the top of the tank or does he swim to the bottom? Might be a swim bladder problem.

no he usually swims around everywhere mostly trying to eat the pebbles??

hi DreadlocK

do you have a filter in your tank?
if you have a filter how do you clean it?
when you clean the tank do you use all fresh water or do a parital water change with dechlorinated tap water
by the way you should be doing a 10%-20% water change every week just to keep the water fresh even if the tank is filtered

your tank size is around 11.88 uk gallons
your water perameters are ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and ph you can buy test kits from any good aquatics shop

do you have any extra air going into the tank?

the food your feeding should be ok but stay away from cheap flake foods
you can feed a pea once a week or even try him on cucumber or lettuce
my fancies dont like cumumber but they love peas
you can even feed brine shrimp or daphnia as a treat

hey thanks for replying
um i do have a filter, the petshop i got it from said it needed to get new carbon filter disks every six months but i usually just open the filter and rinse it out.
when i clean my tank i change all the water and use water ager to remove the chlorine but i do check the ph and keep it at around seven
i'm not sure how to check for nitrates nitrites and ammonia, i'll try and get ammonia ,nitrate and nitrite asap tho
i'm not sure how to get the oxygen tho i was using oxygen weed but my black moor ate it what can i use instead?
wow cucumber? how much would my black moor eat?
thank you so much

hi
you only need a thin slice and only a quarter of the slice
you will need to weigh it done as it will float

what is the name of your filter

for extra oxygen you will need an air pump and an air stone :good:

get some liquid test kits they are really easy just follow the instructions

dont change all the water just change 10-20% of the water and replace it with fresh dechlorinated water,
dont throw the old water out use it to clean your filter media in,
if you clean your filter media in tap water you kill off the filter bacteria and you will keep your filter in a constant state of new filter syndrome which you dont want

the black carbon should be relaced every copule of months i would get another one as if callect the harmfull stuff your fish dont liek and will remove treatments as soon as you put it in

edit do you have any other fish in the tank

carbon lasts longer that a few hours its about every 3 months it need replaced

Activated carbon doesn't remove nitrates from the water.

I agree it lasts longer than 3 hours, but also doesn't last 3 months.
It is more likely to last around a week before all it's 'active properties' have been used up.
It is only really any use for removing tannins or leftover meds from the tank and so regular use is normally costly and unnecessary.

What I think you are thinking of (scott13) is called zeolite. And although a quick fix it's not a substitute for doing things properly via cycling and then weekly water changes.

activeated carbon removes toxins and dyes from the water and
as said will remove meds ,thats why you should remove carbon when treating ill fish
and its should be changed around 3 months if you use the pellet carbon, sooner if you use the foam/sponge carbon

do you have any info on the type of filter what other media does it have it it other then the carbon?
