Hi,

Okay first of all I'll give you a bit of background.
I used to have in my 120ltr tank, 2 platy's and 1 female betta. And they all got on fine.

I have since moved to cichlids, so the platy's and the betta were moved to a small hexafun tank over 1 week ago.
I noticed the betta had started nipping their fins since moving them to the smaller tank, so the platy's have been adopted, and now the betta is on her own.

However, I woke up this morning and there's a BIG collection of spit on the surface of the water. I've google'd this, and it would appear its a bubble nest.

But....the fish isn't pregnant, or certainly doesn't look it.
According to some websites, the male is the one that's meant to build the bubble nest...but there is no male.

Can anyone explain to me why she has done this? Was she just bored? Even if she was pregnant, she can't have babies without the male "squeezing" them out of her right?

some females make bublenests too :) i see it as...... bubble nest = happy fish :)

Ahh, i suppose that's good then.

So it doesn't mean anything that she's made this big bubble nest?

Cool.

Thanks for the replies.

Just means she's a happy fish.
But a pic would be helpful incase she's a plakat (hope I'm using that correectly) male.

Hi, here we go

hi, i think this is a male.
what lilfishie means by "pk" is "Plakat", if you want to look that up :p

could you get a pic of him flaring? hold a mirror by the side of the tank and hopefully he will flare while you take a picture

Wow, that was weird.

I tried it, and he did flare up!

Uploading photos to laptop now

You can see the bubble nest in a few of the photos.

Was kind of hard getting decent photos as there is no light in the tank, so cranked ISO to 800, f2.0, 1/80sec

Some are blurry as you can imagine shooting at f2

good pics! he has nice colours, i like the way the colour fades into the pale yellow :)

defo a male.
by the way, females can flare aswell.
