Hello, this is my 'sucking loach' as the lfs told me, wondered if anyone knew his proper name. I am very fond of him/her?, fascinating to watch him cleaning everything.

He has mad moments going round in circles, is this normal behaviour? Up the front of the tank and then back down, round and up again.

Miss Wiggle, couldn't attach picture in the other part.

Thanks

Elaine

it is a Gyrinocheilus aymonieri
chinese algae eater (CAE)

No that's an otocinclus and yes it's normal behaviour.

Thank you for your help, from the images on google, he looks like a Chinese Algae eater. I just read somewhere while looking that you can tell male and female from the 'thorns' around the mouth, the male has more numerous and pronounced than female. Going off to see which he/she is. I have had for about a year, no aggression yet.....so fingers crossed.

Lol anyone who can't see thats a CAE (Gyrinocheilus aymonieri) really needs to do some homework

No, it's completely different from an otocinclus ;).

It's as The-Wolf says, a Chinese Algae Eater - Gyrinocheilus aymonieri.

It's normal behaviour, they can be mad fish.

They also potentially reach a foot long (but usually only reach about 6") , and most of them seem to become aggressive and attack other fish when older (especially slow moving ones).

Not a nice fish IMO, certainly not great algae eaters once they grow up. Loads of them get handed back to LFS's after killing other fish.

My bad  just looked at my oto looks nothing alike.

It looks like a CAE as you said. Went on google looked at a few pics and can confirm it.

We got 1 of these in a return tank at LFS.

I thought it was an oto.

thats the same that i have its a Algae Eater
Gyrinocheilos aymonieri which has been established. my two seem to always chase each other around. there always fighting and flying from one side of the tank to the other.

great fishes to watch.
