Have just managed to download some pics off my mobile to computer (finally!) and thought I would post one on here. Sorry if it's a bit blurred but I'm no expert as photographing moving fish! Hope I manage to download it onto here properly...

This is George, my short-bodied Pink Convict - at least that's what I think he is! If anyone has any other thoughts on it, let me know. He was sold to me as a Pink Severum - but I've not found any research or info on Pink Severums and I don't think he has exactly the same look as a Severum about him - do you? He is roughly about 2" and has been about that size since I bought him at the beginning of the year some time (I think I must have had him about 8 or 9 months). Neither of the pair have grown much, if at all.

From what I've been reading online, I think he's a cross of a convict and something. I've seen some posts refer to them as Convict Jellybeans - but it all gets so confusing with all the various hybrid mixes that I gave up worrying about it. Given that they don't appear to be growing (unless they are tediously slow growers!!) could they be dwarf/pygmy varieties I wonder?

Anyone else have these fish?

All I know is, he's gorgeous with lots of personality (although a feisty little rotter at times) - and has a female partner who is forever spawning and producing fry. Unfortunately, the fry always end up eaten after about a week but I don't particularly want to rear fry so that's all fine by me and I just let nature take its course!

Here's another pic of George...

I would agree hes not severumish to me, whilst the fins and shape are similar, the head and face arent.

He is very pretty though :D

That's what I thought, Minx - that his face didn't quite match a Severum - it's a little bit too dainty, I think :D plus all the Severums I've seen have red eyes (not sure if that is a Severum trait or just the ones I've seen).

George has a slight blueish tinge to the white of his eyes and under the light a blueish hue to the tips of his fins.

George and his mate, Mildred, love to rearrange the tank on a daily basis - plants never stay where I put them but are shifted around or uprooted. Sometimes, they build a barricade of gravel and plants around the area where Mildred as laid her eggs (which is usually inside a tank ornament). I've had to do a mix of live plants and silk due to their disruptive habits!

Its a short body pink convict, not a hybrid and certainly not mixed with a severum (impossible). Short body cons act pretty much the same as regular cons and certainly just as fiesty. They dont get near as large as regular cons either and if they were dyed when first purchased then that will also stunt them.

Oh thanks, T - nice to have it confirmed.

No, they weren't dyed, as far as I'm aware. If they were dyed wouldn't their fry be a different colour (as in the natural colour) ? I'm pretty sure this is their natural colour.

Do you, or have you, kept SB Pink Convicts? Any idea of their average lifespan?

Sorry, no, they are definitely not parrot fish. Parrot fish have a large, beak-like nose, googly eyes. and fatter bodies.

I believe they are, as T says, short-bodied pink convicts.

Thanks, anyway - Athena

Awwwwwwwww!!

Thanks, Rachel - but...fishy pie??? LOL

Yeah, very cute lil fish - but don't let that cuteness and small size fool you - they still have the temperament of convicts. Friends think I am mad when they see my 3ft tank with just George & Mildred in it, with a 4" rainbow shark who stays well out of their way! They say "How comes you've got such a big tank for just those 3 little fish? It looks empty!" Well, it WAS a community tank once upon a time...but George and Mildred were having none of it and slowly slowly I've had to rehome all their tankmates into other tanks. They wouldn't even tolerate my two dwarf froggies. Kept picking them up by their legs, zooming across to the other side of the tank and spitting them out! They just love to rule the roost!

I thought they were going to grow to 5" or 6" each but now it looks like they won't grow much I wish I had rehomed them into a 2ft tank and kept my community in the 3ft. I've ended up with 4 separate tanks now LOL

So if you ever get any yourself, best to keep them on their own! They might look like little angels but they are devils in disguise hehehehe! But I still love 'em...

As long as they have not been dyed (even very light pink ones could be) then the can live pretty much as long as a regular convict (I think its about 8+ years). Sometimes short body fish develop swim bladded problems and I have lost a short body con to this.

Heres one of mine with his mate at the time which as a sajica.

Aw, Rachel pie LOL - I've just taken a look at your little Angel delight and she's very pretty. Never mind those harsh criticisms about dyed fish and saying you didn't do your research - ok, yes, we all know it's a cruel practice and wouldn't knowingly support it - but you didn't know this when you bought Angel (and even if your LFS had mentioned it, it probably wouldn't have meant much to you as a newbie in fishkeeping, anyway), so the main thing is that you love her and are trying to give her a good quality of life.

Ok, so you might have to invest in a slightly larger tank set up as she grows but she'll be worth it. I don't agree that you are going to need a whacking great 6 foot (55/60gallon) tank for one fish, though, as someone implied (unless you intend on getting a few more fish).

Anyway, hope you keep up with the regular water changes and eventually your tank water will be fully cycled and Angel will be happy and should lose those dark colourings you mentioned.

Last night George and Mildred had me in stitches - I'd put an algae wafer in for them and they started playing tug of war with it. George won and raced off with it in his mouth, dashing around the tank, with Mildred in hot pursuit. She finally caught up with him and managed to tug it out of his mouth - then off she zoomed around the tank trying to find a place to hide from George but he was fast on her heels and caught up with her and grabbed the wafer back! LOL - they went on like this for ages - neither of them actually getting a chance to eat the bloomin' thing hahahaha! In the end, I think they both got tired and the wafer was dropped to the floor, whereby Billy the rainbow shark got in on the act and snuck it into his cave LOL :hyper:

Was real comical!

Oh, T - that's a lovely one you've got there! A bit bigger than my Georgie-pie (oh gawd, Rachel's got me at it now LOL).

Re their colouring - I read somewhere online that SB pink convicts are a pseudo albino variety (purposely bred to look this way) - not sure how much truth is in that, though.

Oh well - all we can do is take care of them and hope for the best.

Thanks - Athena
