Hi,

Can anyone ID this for me please? I got it free in with a bunch of Vallis from the LFS, and i'm not sure what it is.

Many thanks :good:

That is the core of the common water lilly (found in ponds)... needs plenty direct sunlight and not suitable for indoor tropical tanks.

Thanks Ludwig. :good:

Why is it unsuitable for aquaria?

Why is it unsuitable for aquaria?

Cause the sub strata required is a lot more dense (almost sand) than your average aquaria and when I say need more direct sun, I mean almost the whole day, which would make your tank turn green in less than 3 days......

Not liking to disagree, but to me it actually looks like the long bits my mature vallisneria plants get at their bases once they are a few years old. So considering that it came in a bunch of val I would say that likely as not it's an old lump of val. lol

You may be right Wolf, but imo Vallis propogates by "runners" & looking at the thick roots (only 2) and the silky algea blanket over the top half of the "core",..... I'm just wondering?? This seems quite large for an extended vallis root crown...

Me thinks it is a Lily. Might not be a common pon Lily because it looks like the stalk of My Nuphar Japonica did after a while. the 'pineconing' is from pulling stalks off (pruning) and then it grows new ones further up (as you can see).

Vals tend to grow new leaves from the same level and get wider at the base wheras the Nuphar always grew new leaves further up.

Strange you should say that Andy. I was thinking it may be a Nurphar Japonica myself.

It has started to sprout a leaf now which is the semi-triangular shape which the Nurphur exhibits. I'll try to get a decent pic of the leaf later and post it up. :good:

I had one grow to about 3 inches long by about 3/4 of an inch in diameter once on a very mature plant, needless to say I binned that plant as it started to look ratty. It is also quite possible that it is a nuphar root, but given that it came in a bunch of val I just thought that this was less likely.

I've now dug up this one from my pond.... Note the resemblance (a picture is worth a thousand words)
This is the common pond lilly (see the little shoots right at the top......)
