Exploring a boggy area near the local organic farm, I discovered what has turned out to be a real find! Anyone who comes across the Spring 2004 edition of the Journal of the British Iris Society can find an article I wrote about this unusual Iris on page 5!

Couple of months later, the seed pods have opened to reveal the "blackberries", which give the plant it's common name "Blackberry Iris".

What a wonderful iris! I've never seen one before. How did you stop yourself from taking all the "black berries" and starting plants everywhere?

I collected about 100 seeds. I've kept about a dozen and sent the rest to the species group at the British Iris Society. They are going to try to grow them as well. They were REALLY excited by it. I'd tried to find out what it was and when I couldn't find it, I sent the pictures to a garden plant specialist in England. About a week later I had the BIS mailing me with an identification and a request to write up a piece for their Journal.

I left most of the seeds on the plants so they can self seed and increase in number.

It really is a quite extraordinary colour for an Iris isn't it!

Stunning I have never seen an Iris with that colouration they tend to be darker shades. Great find lateral and congratulations on the article. Best of luck growing the plants, if you ever have to many to handle you know were to send them.

I have this growing in my garden! It is an amazing little plant. Great pictures!

Hi LL :)

Congratulations on having your article published.

You must have had a fine time finding and watching the progress of this lovely plant. I hope you can grow them, as well, and I'll look forward to seeing more pictures of them in the future.
