What fish did you use for your first betta spawn?
I would LOVE to spawn... but I really don't want to go through everything of shipping bettas from thailand, etc. Frankly, I've shipped in bettas twice and both spawns were a failed attempt... is there any decent way (and cheaper, under $25-30?) to buy good fish for a spawn? Let me add I wouldn't consistently breed petstores, but only to test out my breeding abilities. Honestly, I've read through and most people say their breeding didn't work the first time. My LFS would take the fish anyway (well... not if I ended up with 200...)
FYI: I'm not sure if I want to try spawning again, but I'm thinking about it.

My first breeding pair was one that I got for free from someone on a betta forum (just paid shipping).

First of all, find out if there are any betta clubs in your area, or even just general fishkeeping clubs. If you buy from a local breeder it saves you a lot of shipping costs!

Also, do you have a Petco nearby? Mine sells delta and HM males, and sometimes some really pretty females. The challenge is to find a matched pair!

Other than that, there are a few US breeders posting fish on Aquabid, and there are people on this forum who breed (although most are in the UK). They usually don't quite match up to the amazing Thai fish, but they will still be better than petstore fish.

my first pair were a wild type pk male and a pk cambodian red female

I do have a Petco... but it's a good hour away in the wrong direction. I have, however, seen some gorgeous males (crowntails, yes, and sometimes a delta) But it's precisely 29.9 miles away.
However, I am a firm believer Petco sells good fish... I was at a Petco in Arizona once, and their shelves were stocked with HM/SD/CT/PK males and females but unfortunately you can't bring fish on a two-hour plane ride. I'm not sure about the breed clubs; I don't think we do, at least locally.

And blue betta, those fish are gorgeous! I LOVE the color on the female!

My first spawn was a red marble ct male x red cambodian ct female both of which I got from petco. The babies weren't anything special but it was good experience.

My first spawn if you can call it that (fry didnt last that long :-( ) i got a bluey red pk male from my lfs that was in a batch of females very young and a mustard gas vt female (obviously i waited for the male to get older) a odd colour combination i know :p but they went well togteher.
