I don't know the age of my fighting fish, Fred, but I bought him from the local pet store in May 2005 for a school science project. He has this... white growth on his butt (where the poo comes out). This developed quite a while ago... I can't remember exactly when, but I'm sure it developed last year. I was thinking it would be fatal so I was super nice to him, but he is still alive, fortunately.

Recently, he suddenly stopped eating. He didn't eat for three days, and then ate one pellet, the fasted for another three days, then ate another. Usually he eats 4 pellets a day (2 in the morning, 2 at night). At first, I thought he had an eating disorder ("YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL NO MATTER WHAT THEY SAY") but then I realized that perhaps he stopped eating because he hasn't been able to poo due to the white growth covering his poohole. He has started to eat these past few days (one/two pellets a day) but I see no poo in his bowl at all (I cleaned his bowl a few days ago), so I'm super worried.

Fred is a rather lazy fish, he has had no interaction with another fish for 1.5 years and he spends most of the time either lying on the floor or up near the surface of the water. I've heard that this is a sign that the fish is dying, but he's been like that for a year. He does respond positively when I approach the bowl.

Can anyone possibly tell me what that white growth is? And how to cure it... if that's possible. Remember that he's had it for more than a year now and he's still alive. Otherwise, please suggest any other reasons as to why he has cut his diet down.

im sorry i dont know what to say
but i love the picture of fred with nemo
hahhaha

*sigh*... Fred looks so plain compared to the other bettas around here. My friend said Fred is ugly... I only think his white butt spot is ugly. His face is adorable otherwise heheheheh

hi Dafooni. Firstly, the white patch doesn't cover the area that they poo from. It's actually a lot further forward just behind the ventral fins [the 2 long dangly ones at the front], so this wouldn't stop him from going. Have no idea what the white patch could be if he's had it for so long, it may just be his colouring.

He is though, a really old fish if you got him in May 2005, so it may just be old age now that's stopping him from eating.

Well done for keeping him so long, he's a lovely boy. Just carry on doing what you have, it obviously works! :good:

Thanks Htw! I just assumed the poo comes out from where the white butt growth is because I swear I've seen poo hanging from there. He must have just picked it up while he was swimming past the poo. =___= Well thanks for that. At least I know it's not the growth which is stopping him from eating hahahaha.

Yeah, Fred's pretty old. To be totally honest I never expected him to last this long. His counterpart died 6 months after we got them... But that was my brother's fish so HAHA to him. I'm not sure what I've done that's prolonged his life, because if you compare Fred to other fish he's pretty neglected. My brother forgets to feed him in the morning, so Fred usually doesn't get breakfast until 4pm =_= Oh, I play my violin for him though. Maybe that helps? Lol.

[Edit: The white patch wasn't there when we bought him, and it doesn't look like a part of his skin.]

UPDATE: He's eating! He ate four pellets yesterday, and had two this morning. YAY! Still doesn't explain that white butt spot... Could it be a fungal infection? It kind of looks like this picture: http://www.bettatalk.com/images/body_fungus.jpg

Only, it's only covering the "butt" and not most of the body... Please help!

I've just been looking at pictures of fish with dropsy. Does anyone else get the shudders? The scales are... *shudders*

Glad he's eating now.

As to the white patch, it really doesn't look like fungus to me, especially after having it for so long. [that's just my opinion though]

He doesn't by any chance like to sit on the heater does he? Heater burn maybe??

Actually..... He's so neglected that he doesn't even have a heater even in the winter.....

I tried putting him in front of a gas heater once, wasn't a good idea, these gas bubbles started forming at the bottom of his bowl.

Yeah I'm really happy he's eating now. He looks like he's ready to eat more than four pellets a day. Very enthusiastic about feeding time now. Every time he sees me he just looks up to the surface of the water waiting for food to drop. God, he's so much smarter than my brother.

... There are now spots of red on the white spot. It kinda looks like blood...

Yes, ever since I saw those pictures I've actually had nightmares that my fish had it. So sad, and scary-looking.

Have you tried any anti-bacterials or anti-fungal medicine for him? I haven't had to medicate my fish but it seems that there are lots of experts here who can hopefully point you in the right direction.

Hi, thanks so much for replying. I just consulted a friend who has the medicine and he said it's unusable on Fred because he lives in a bowl and not a proper sized tank. I don't have a "hospital" tank either because Fred is my only fish. O_O

I think a lot of people use bowl as hospital "tanks"...hmmm. I don't know why you couldn't medicate a bowl. Search through some threads here and see if someone else has done it, maybe?

Yeah. He said that the bowl isn't big enough and that Fred might die from and overdose of the medicine. I'll go do some more research about it.
